A/N:
Hee hee. T'was about time Raffi started a *new* fan fic. (: Well yeah. I'll *really really truly promise* to devote my time to this one when I have...the time! It's like a summer fic which'll be shorter than AUA (especially chapter-wise since I'm not always on as much as I used to/need to be). So yeah..this story is centered on *Jake and Rose* but there will some background *Shade and Florence* too since I *love* Ewan so much and his characters - and it's the pairing that I mean. It's an *alternate universe* story so it's not based off the storyline whatsoever, except for a few things about the characters that already exist. There's mostly *OCs* and characters from other stories/shows/etc. Well, before I ramble on, here's the first chapter. I don't have much time for a summary so I'll put it later. :DD
By the way, you *have to* ask in order for yer character to be a part of this story. Just ask and I *might* squeeze you in somehow depending on how many OCs I already have.

Chapter One
The Way It All Began
---
There was a devastating exclaim that echoed the darkened depths of the rugged, mountainous area. Roars filled the air and the intoxicated fuming smells of fire surrounded the environment, making a foggy ambiance. A boy, barely even seven, unevenly darted from one place to another as if he were in a desperate investigation for something – or more likely, somebody. His blue hair bounced wildly as he continued making his way towards one place to another.
“Jake! Jake!” panted the youngster as he sustained with his speeding. Awaiting a response that never came, he became more worried as the fear slowly crawled to his spine. There was an unrelenting silence as his footsteps promptly reverberated throughout the woods-like atmosphere.
“Shade?” came a slightly distant voice. The dim, human figure leapt up and down furiously in distressed attempts to gain his attention.
“Jake? Where are you?” Shade sped forward then sighed in relief as if a thousand pounds of weights were lifted off his shoulders when he had spotted his pal. It would usually be a time when one would hug his best friend, but at his young age, it seemed as though his thoughts told him otherwise.
“Phew,” Jake had done the same, only with more respite heaving from his breath.
“Boy am I glad I didn’t lose you,” chirped the slightly shorter buddy of the two, Shade, as they trotted side-by-side, “completely, that is.”
Jake acted as if he were opening his mouth to say something but stopped when he waved a hand in front of his friend, a hand reluctantly hanging on his shoulder as he turned to the direction behind him to see a sinister sight. Shade and Jake always heard about bizarre, outlandish “fairy tales” or “ghost stories” of sorts about strange creatures with the simple objective to collect hearts and multiply as a group of nobodies as if though they existed nor they hadn’t. It had come to their minds, at their own age, to never believe in such wild fantasies. Only up to this day, reality came to its fittest and decided to be a bit serious on what would happen if no one took the time to understand the true facts.
“Don’t just stand there! Go!” ejected Jake towards his slightly motionless, extremely frightened pal. With no hope of him making a single notion, he snatched Shade’s hand, as he was literally “swept off his feet” as they both sped off side-by-side. The two boys sprinted as speedy as their two legs could take them. It was always that routine of teamwork – if one person falls, the other should help them up.
There is never such a thing, at a situation like this, as a single individual making way through the burrow of safety on their own; they are always longing to seek help from a friend or a stranger that has a heart kind enough and willing to stop to take a while to assist in their time of need. Slowly making their way out of the “jungle” of sinister, yellow-eyed creatures, Shade unknowingly tumbled to the ground and he fell face-first, looking behind at his untidy, dirt-covered shoelaces.
Figures. Shade continuously mumbled to his self as he struggling to push himself up to his full height. It’s always the shoelaces that pull me down.
A hand slowly jerked him upwards, Shade faltering clumsily as Jake motioned for them to sustain with their attempt to escape. As both of them came across a gorge they can simply jump over down the crevice to safety, Shade abruptly skid his feet on the ground, wondering what the voice coming from the bushes had been.
“Woah!” Jake had attempted to make a stop but then went off too far. He yelled dreadfully all of a sudden as he stopped his fall by clinging his life on a single limb of a tree on the rugged mountain that dangled almost loosely. Time only knew how long that single branch could hold almost fifty pounds of weight, “Shade! Help me out here?”
Upon waiting for a reaction, Shade continued investigating the rustling bushes.
Of all times, he had to wander off now did he? His pal mused to himself, grunting softly as he attempted to try and communicate with the branch to just support him a little longer. Shade slowly peeked his head through the leafy shrub and spotted a girl who he thought had been familiar. The once-unconscious girl slowly came around, dizzily holding her head up and almost gasped at the sight of him her blurry vision also gradually becoming clear.
“Florence..?” whispered Shade as he kindly held out a hand and she willingly took it, “What are you doing here?”
“Shade!” Jake exclaimed once again as if he were reminding his friend that he almost forgot somebody, not even giving the girl of the boys’ age a chance to speak, “Hanging like a bat here!!” The three could hear a crunching-like sound that crackled, coming from the weak branch that Jake held on to.
“I know you might die from a girl’s cooties before the shadows get you, but save me!!”
“Hold on!” Shade ignored the previous comment that Florence took a bit seriously while he heroically dove down the chasm, thinking twice about what he had just done. After a while, he felt as if he were about to fall down to the ground below when he made an effortless mumble and, to his surprise, a pair of giant blue wings appeared on his sides.
“Nice wings, Shade, but do you think that-” He was cut after he then realized the limb broke off, “AAHHH!”
Shade made a dashing glide with his newly acquired wings, beating them furiously as he grabbed a hold of Jake and attempted to pull up his slightly heavier pal upwards, “Don’t worry, Jake! Shade’s got `ya!”
As they both made a relieved landing on the near-end of the cliff, both of them looked at each other with shocked reactions while they both made a jump down the cliff and landed down – right after Florence separated from them, that is.
“Thanks for…um, saving me,” Jake didn’t exactly know what to say, nervously placing a hand behind his head, glancing away.
“You’re welcome, pal,” Shade lowered his gaze as his set of large, wings disappeared, “That’s what friends do…”
“Sure do, amigo…” His best friend held a hand out and Shade nodded, understanding what he had been trying to send out to him as a gesture. They both slapped each other’s hands from the sides, made a fist then beat each others’ hands up and down, and finally, brought them forward and then pulled themselves towards each other then hugged – releasing from each other’s embrace a little after that since they knew how awkward it was already for their gender to sustain with that sort of hug.
“No matter what happens to us, we’ll always be pals forever, right?”
“Through thick and thin, Jake, forever we’ll both stand.”
---
That had been nearly seven years ago. But did the friendship ever last or did they both end up losing each other after an even more overwhelming strike of war?
