Well after a long period of Writers block, I guess its been too long since I last updated the other fics. People have probably lost interest in them. I may update them later, I may not. For now I shall try to get this fic done without suffering writers block halfway through .
The Star of David
Prologue
GERMANY 1937
It had only been a week since I discovered I had dragon powers, aside from my newly found powers which I still lacked any control over, I was still the feeble young Jewish boy who I always was, when I was younger. My room was right next to the cellar. When I was younger, I had complained non stop about that as I was scared that some sort of Monster may come up from the basement and get me while I was thinking, but I had no idea that on that hot summer night, in Germany, 1937 it would save my life. In 1932 a new force had come into power. Germany was no longer the frail culture it was directly after world war 2. For most of Germany the National Socialists brought in a welcome change, they stood up to the powers of the world, and reestablished the economy, People could once again afford the basic necessities which they had been starved from them since the lost of the first world war. But this change was not the best for everybody. The media fell under the control of the government. They ruled with an iron fist and spread fear far and wide. They also had certain groups, who they vowed they would ‘deal’ with. One of these groups was us, the Jews.
I had never really understood my parents fear of the Nazis. At the time, I was probably too young, or never really payed attention. But on that fateful July, I came to realize the brutes that were the Nazis. I never thought that man could be so cruel to each other. I guess deep inside being a dragon, a being which is meant to protect others, it was totally against my logic. I was in my room on that night, I believe I didn’t want to come out cause my parents were having an argument. I guess the fear had gotten to them. All I had heard about for the past few months were plans to flee. I didn’t really want to leave, I had no idea what was going on.
I slowly watched the sun disappear below the horizon. Then I heard a loud bang at the front door. I had no idea what it was. I slowly crept to the door to my room and heard other thuds. I slowly opened my door, so I could just see through down the hallway. It looked like my father was having an argument with someone. I couldn’t see who it was, but I could definitely see that it wasn’t my mother. I began to feel really scared. Suddenly the figure lunged and knocked my father over. I could now see him clearly, he wore the uniform of a Nazi officer. My father started to get up again, but the Nazi pulled out what looked like a baton and began beating him on the head with it. Then I heard my mother scream. Fear overtook me and I hastily backed from the door and ran to the secret cellar. The door meshed in very well with the wall, so it was hard to spot. I opened it and jumped in, shutting the door behind me. I couldn’t hear much from behind the wall, but there was a small crack I could peer through into my room.
For a while, there seemed to be nothing. I was tempted to open the door again and see what had happened, but every time I did so, fear overtook me. Just as I was about to pick up the courage to open the door, I saw a Nazi swing open my door, and start to peer very carefully around my room. He walked into the centre of the room where my bed was, and in 1 huge heave, tipped it up on its side. Upon seeing nothing, he continued searching. This gave me a huge shock and I almost whimpered. Then he started to slowly feel along the wall. I hoped to god that he didn’t know there was a cellar, or that he wouldn’t find it. He ran his hand along, slowly getting closer, carefully inspecting the wall at each part. If he looked close enough he might have noticed the crack in the wall.
He approached, then I noticed, he was tapping the wall. I was only young, but I knew what he was doing, checking the sound, to see if it was hollow behind. I froze in fear, and clenched my eyes shut. He would find this place for sure I realized. I saw him through the crack in the wall, he was now up to me. All he had to do was knock and he would find this room. I held my hands tight against the wall in an effort to give the knock a less hollow sound. He raised his arms, in order to pound the wall. I held my breath and closed my eyes, waiting for the seemingly inevitable knock that would reveal my cover. I waited, and waited; Nothing. I opened my eyes and peered through the hole. The Nazi had turned around. It looked as if someone had called him. He looked back towards the wall for a second, then turned and walked out the door.
I let out my breath in relief. He was gone, it seemed. I waited for a second, panting, trying to catch my breath again. I slowly moved my hand over to the handle, in an attempt to open the door. But just before I did, the man came back into the room. I could see he was dragging someone with him, but I couldn’t see who. I heard a small noise, but it wasn’t enough to make out the frequency of the shouts. The Nazi then threw the person they were dragging onto the ground.
‘I wish I could hear who it was’ I thought to myself, closing my eyes again. A tear swelled up in my eyes, and I almost shouted “Why is this happening?” I kept my eyes closed. Confused and almost dazed, wishing I could hear what was going on in that room. Something felt a little weird on my ears. I ignored it for the first second or two, but then I suddenly heard some screaming. I recognized the voice. It was my mother. She was on the ground screaming in my room, and the Nazi was shouting at her, he seemed to be calling her a ‘dirty Jew.’ I didn’t know why I could hear it and at the time, I really edidnt care. All I could hear was the screaming and in a muffled voice my mother shouting leave us alone.
“I wont ask you again, you filthy creature, Is your son here?” the Nazi shouted.
“No I swear” She replied crying. Then I saw and heard him kick her on the ground.
“FINE!!!” the Nazi yelled, and drew out a Luger. “Your kind has contaminated this country for long enough” he sneered. Then I saw it. He fired the Luger twice. I saw the blasts then I heard the it. The sound of each bullet piercing my ears as if it were the bullet itself hitting me. I fell back against the back wall of the cellar. A just blocked everything out. I seemed to be trying to hide from reality, but what had just happened did not seem like reality. I fell into a daze, and curled up. I couldn’t tell if I were crying or sobbing, I just didn’t care to take notice.
I don’t know how long I was there for. I sort of snapped back to reality when I smelled smoke. I breathed in a long slow sob and looked up. I used the back wall as support, slowly inched my way to my feet. I peered through the crack in the wall and looked into my room. No one was there. My hearing seemed to be back to normal. I slowly reached over to the cellar door. The smell of smoke was becoming ever stronger. I pushed open the cellar and stumbled out. I came across the body of my mother. I almost lost it then, and collapsed onto my hands and knees and let out a small shriek. I suddenly felt really sick and before I knew it, I threw up on the ground. I guess not everything was able to sink in at that very moment, as I scrambled to my feet and stumbled down the hallway. There was blood down there, and broken ornaments lying around. I looked through to the kitchen which was on fire. I realized most of the house was on fire, by some chance of miracle, the fire had not yet consumed my room or the hallway leading to the front door. I opened the door, peering outside. It was a small house in a thin laneway. Nobody was out the front. All the Nazis had seemed long gone. I then collapsed down the front stairs, more sobs and tears escaping from me on the way down. I crawled into the center of the laneway, and just stayed on my hands and knees, frozen for a few minutes. I then got a little better grip of myself. I knew I had to get away from there. There was only one way I knew how to do that. My grandfather had taught me how to turn dragon, just 1 week before, and I had gone through some basic flying training.
I felt myself go dragon, and sighed for a second. I turned back to my house which was now entirely engulfed in flames. I’m glad it didn’t all sink in at once, if it had, I would have gone completely mad. Time exists for a reason. With that I jumped into the sky, putting the burning house behind me. I had heard that I wasn’t supposed to let people see me go dragon, but at that moment, I really didn’t care. I began flying, I didn’t know where I would fly to, but I didn’t care. I just wanted to go anywhere.
