AN: Since I'm currently experiencing a writer's block as far as chapter 5 "Confessions" is concerned, it might take a little while for me to post it. Sorry for the delay...

Chapter 5: Confessions
Jake had dozed off. He hadn’t meant to; he just did. He was exhausted from the battle, and even in human form his scrapes throbbed. The Dragon Council was currently holding a meeting, trying to decide whether or not Rose was worthy of the trust of the magical community. In Jake and Lao Shi’s opinion she had proven herself in her battle against the Huntsman, and had told the Councilors as much. The rest, unfortunately, was up to them now.
He was just dreaming some odd little thing that involved Anderson and Chang dancing around with flaming batons when a cool hand on his shoulder jerked him from dream world. Instead of immediately opening his eyes he instead kept them close, enjoying the feeling of Rose’s hand on his shoulder, until she piqued dryly, “Do I need to whack you with a frying pan, or would you rather I danced around with flaming batons?”
That got his attention (Stupid dream! Although seeing Rose dance wouldn’t be a bad thing…).
“Okay, okay, I’m awake!” he protested. “Just don’t whack me to hard, or you’ll be the one doing CPR! Same thing with the batons!” Rose smirked. As Jake blinked sleep from his eyes, he saw that she had changed out of her Huntsgirl attire and into her normal clothes, although she still wore her hair in a braid. Despite the mischief in her eyes, the combination gave her a sober look that Jake had never seen before. With a small jerk of her head, Rose indicated that wanted Jake to get up. As he stood, her hand slid from his shoulder to rest comfortably in his hand. “What’s up?” he asked. “I…. um….” Rose swallowed hard. This wasn’t going to be easy for her. She ducked her head. “Where did they bury him? My uncle?” Jake frowned. “In the gully, where you fought him,” he answered. “…. Can I see it?” “Are you sure you want to?” “Yeah…. Yeah, I am…”
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Jake and Rose walked hand-in-hand through the park. The moon shone down brightly, splashing the grass in a gentle silver glow. There was no blood, no marks, nothing to show that a battle had been fought there only hours ago. The two skirted an older couple and made their way down to the gully. They climbed to the edge of the rock when Rose stopped. Jake looked back at her questioningly. “You said you wanted to do this,” he reminded her gently. Rose let out a small whimper, but allowed Jake to lead her into the gully. Her grip on his hand tightened until it was almost painful, but if Jake minded he kept it to himself.
The bottom of the gully basically looked like the park…. Untouched…. And yet, Rose saw a difference. Fresh turned earth. Something—she knew what—was buried beneath it. On top of the mound was a small rock, and carefully carved into it was the following:
I never knew his name But he was a great warrior And he raised his niece well R.I.P
“You did that, didn’t you?” Rose asked, turning to face Jake. He blushed faintly. “Yeah, well… someone had to…. And it’s true….” Without a word, Rose tugged her hand out of Jake’s and walked over to the rock, crouching down and lightly carving the letters with her finger. Jake watched her, uncertain if he should go to her or stay put. As Rose crouched there she felt it again, the grief and remorse that she had voiced in battle, only it was different this time. Instead of assaulting her, it instead seeped throughout her entire body, giving her chills, and slowly the chills faded to be replaced by a quiet feeling of acceptance, an understanding for what she had done and why she had done it.
“I’m not going to say I didn’t know what I was doing,” she murmured softly. “I did know. When I started the battle, Master, I knew it would end with your death.” She stood, dusting her pants. “I won’t defend myself to you… I never have to. What I did I did for a reason. You might not understand it, but I’m okay with that. I understand, and that’s all that matters now.” Falling silent, she walked back over to Jake.
“You really shouldn’t talk to yourself like that,” Jake teased gently. “People might get the wrong idea.” Rose shrugged. “As long as you don’t think I’m crazy, then I don’t care what other people think,” she replied. Her blue eyes met his dark ones, and in their burning light she saw sadness, compassion, understanding…
Love.
With a half whimper, half sob, Rose threw herself against Jake, catching him by surprise, and they both tumbled to the ground. Dazed by both the fall and the feeling of Rose’s body on top of his, Jake hesitantly stroked her back while her whole body shook, powerful tremors that Jake felt right to the soles of his shoes.
“I’m being torn in two!”
The anguished wail that had torn Jake’s heart in two only weeks ago rang loudly in his head now. “Hey,” he murmured. “C’mon, what’s wrong?” “You should hate me!” “Say WHAT?!” “I’m… I was… you’re enemy… and… Jake….” Rose’s body heaved with sobs. “Jake, I killed him. I thought coming here would make me okay with it, and in a way it did, but…. Now I know… Jake, in that battle, I knew how it was going to end. I knew he had to die.” She let out a strangled moan. “And I killed him.” “Hey…. Hey, don’t beat yourself up about it…” Jake pushed himself up onto his elbows, which didn’t succeed in loosening Rose’s grip on him. “Rose… I… uh….”
The blue-eyed girl suddenly realized their current position and shifted so that her weight wasn’t completely on top of the boy beneath her, supporting herself on her elbows, looking straight into his eyes. “Don’t beat myself up about it…? Jake…” She was cut off when Jake promptly (and quite unexpectedly) silenced her by pressing his lips to hers. Her eyes widened in shock, then slowly closed
The seconds that followed were uninterrupted while Jake was treated to a delicious sensation of warmth that started somewhere in his middle and traveled up into his chest. It was a very nice feeling—the way he felt when he had been little, when his mom gave him a good night kiss, but different. There was something about it that he couldn’t quite describe. Same could be said for Rose, who was off somewhere in La-La Land and not about to come down to reality any time soon.
What Rose found particularly enjoyable about the whole thing was how close she was to Jake; both could feel the other’s heartbeat (Which not to surprisingly was going through the roof), and acting on pure impulse, Rose twined her fingers through Jake’s hair. The moment was utter perfection, it was so warm and loving, it couldn’t possibly get any better then this…
… And the fact that their lungs were in desperate need of air finally came to their attention.
They drew apart, gasping slightly. Rose rolled gently off of Jake and collapsed next to him with a smile on her face that clearly indicated that a part of her mind was somewhere else. “Wow. Just… wow.” Jake laughed. Feeling content and at peace, Rose snuggled against him, feeling happier then she ever had before. For a long time they just lay that way, not really paying any attention to what was going on around them.
“… Hey, Jake?” “Yeah?” The boy rolled over so he could get a better view of the girl next to him. “Where did you learn to do that?” “Kissing?” Jake blushed. “This was my first, actually.” “You’re kidding.” “Nope.” There was a moment of silence as Rose considered this, then she reached out and gently twined her fingers with his. “I love you, do you know that?”
Jake smiled gently at her. “You just told me.” He leaned down and kissed her again, for a few seconds. “I love you to.”
Rose grinned, then feeling oddly wicked she pounced on Jake and pinned him beneath her for the second time that night. “Want do it again?” she asked. Jake placed his hands on Rose’s shoulders and gently pulled her closer. “What do you think?” “I think that’s totally a yes,” she replied, then lowering her face to his drew him into a second kiss that they both decided after about eight-to-ten seconds was just as good as the first one.
From the shadows, Lao Shi turned amused eyes to Councilor Anderson. “Do you think we should interrupt them, and let them know that she has been accepted?” he asked. The other dragon smiled, never taking his eyes off the young ones in front of him. “No,” he said. “We’ll tell them later.”
Spreading their wings, the two dragons flew off silently into the night sky, unnoticed by Jake and Rose.
The End
I originally meant for Rose to be all angsty and Jake would comfort her, and in the process…. Well… you know… but instead I wrote this little fluffy…. Thing. *Poke* I’ve never written pure fluff before…
