Promise
Breakdown
I can’t take this
I need somewhere to go
I need you
I’m so restless
I don’t know what to do
It was raining.
Well, by raining, it wasn’t a downpour. More of a light, silvery drizzle that just barely bathed the grass.
From beneath her umbrella, Rose watched the raindrops with a small smile; she held out a hand, letting it get wet. It felt nice and cool against her hand, and unable to resist she brought it back and pressed her palm to her lips, savoring it.
We’ve had our rough times
Fighting all night
And now you’re just slipping away
So give me this chance
To make the wrongs right, to say:
Don’t don’t don’t walk away
So far, the family had settled in nicely at Hong Kong. Rose was doing well in her new school—but then, she was used to moving, so she could adjust to pretty much anyplace at this rate. Her sister was having a harder time, but she always settled sooner or later.
Letting her hand fall to her side, Rose frowned as the rain tapped lightly against her umbrella.
It had been weeks—months, really—since she’d left New York. And yet, she couldn’t get that boy out of her head. Had he even mentioned his name?
I promise
I won’t let you down, you down
If you take my hand tonight
I promise
We’ll be just fine, this time
If you take my hand tonight
She was quite certain he hadn’t given his name—or maybe he had… Jack? Jim? No… Jake?
Yeah… yeah, Jake… That had been his name…
Why was he bugging her so much? He was constantly on her mind at the most horrible times. She didn’t even know him that well, but something about him had gotten under her skin.
Rose almost felt… as though she’d seen him before. As if she’d known him once.
There was a light splash, and she began to walk.
Without you
I go through the motions
Without you
It’s just not quite the same
Without you
I don’t want to go out
I just want to say
But that was insane, of course. She’d only met him that day; he’d practically run her over on his skateboard, they’d had a three second chat, and then he was gone. Just like that.
So why was it bugging her so much? She’d left him behind in New York, not even knowing him… yet somehow…
Rose paused, looking up over her shoulder at a flicker; overhead, the streetlight flickered weakly, darkened, and glowed strongly again. She frowned, shrugged, and kept walking.
It was just a coincidence. Nothing more. End of story. Good bye, good day, see you next time.
… This was going to drive her totally insane, wasn’t it?
That I’m sick of these fights
I’ll let you be right
If it stops you from running away
So give me this chance
To make the wrongs right, to say:
Don’t don’t don’t walk away
At this rate, yes. Yes it was.
Rose kept walking, barely noticing that the drizzle was beginning to come down a little harder, the silvery streams darkening to gray.
He was a boy. She’d met boys before. He was gone. Many boys had left her life before. There was nothing special about him. Nothing at all. Nothing. Zip. Zero. None.
Except for the annoying fact that she felt like she’d met him before.
… That she felt like she’d loved him before.
She walked a little faster.
I promise
I won’t let you down, you down
If you take my hand tonight
I promise
We’ll be just fine, this time
If you take my hand tonight
Rose paused, taking a deep breath. She was going to calm down. She was going to stop thinking about this and get her heartbeat to slow down. She was going to force Jake out of her mind, even if she had to bang her head against a metal pole to accomplish it.
And, while she was thinking about what she was going to do, she was going to get out of the rain—it was falling especially heavy now, for some reason—dry off, and get started on her homework.
And, in the process, completely and thoroughly forget Jake. Yes.
She could do it. She just needed to focus.
Take my hand
I promise
She reached her house much quicker than, surprisingly, she would have liked. The short walk hadn’t given her enough time to completely purge her system of the mysterious Jake boy.
… That, she reminded herself, was why she had homework, and parents that nagged, and a sister that snuck into her room to listen to her stereo. There were plenty of things to do that would force Jake out of her mind.
Not that they could work, but she wouldn’t think of that.
Sighing, Rose snapped her umbrella shut and squealed as the rain pounded down on her with all the force of a sledgehammer for one brief moment; she wrenched her door open and raced inside, but as she turned to close the door behind her she froze for a split second.
For a moment—just a moment—she could have sworn she saw a red dragon flying through the dark, cloudy skies.
If you take my hand tonight
I won’t let you down
Take my hand tonight
The End
Now for a horribly long Author's Note. XD
... Okay, all humor aside... the content of this story might seem romantic, but the reason it was written is more of a friendship thing.
This is for LP... because... I screwed up. Big time.
I do that a lot. Screw up, I mean. I say something wrong, do something bad. I can't take it back. I wish I could. But I can't.
LP... I don't know if you'll read this, and you might hate me forever if you do... but I'm sorry. Ever since that blog you posted... I feel like we've lost something. We were practically best friends, and now... it's like walking on eggshells. And I swear, I'd do anything to get it back... but maybe it's all my fault to begin with, you know? Because... I mean, you know... I lost interest in AmDrag and all... And I know that really got you mad....
I just.... I'm sorry, okay? ..... I'm sorry....
