In the spirit of recently discovering Nickelback would be releasing their 6th Studio album soon, I thought I would review my all time favourite album from them "Silver Side Up".
Well, I mean really? What can be said about this album? It's everything that makes Nickelback. It's what pulled them out of obcurity and made them one of the biggest names in the music industry.
Debuting when their smash hit "How You Remind Me" which received the most radio play in America, Canada and several other parts of the U.S. in 01 as well as Billboard song of the year for 2001!
Today it is looked back as the song that put them on the map and where they are today.
With big shoes to fill their second single was the smash hit song "Too Bad" which Kroeger wrote about the struggles of growing up without his father.
It really was a touching song, that you could really relate to as they lyrics themselves told a story and painting a picture so clear you felt as though you were in the shoes of the boy who had to grow up in such hardships.
The "Too Bad" music video is now acknowledged as one of Nickelback's most popular and sucessful music videos to this day.
Third and finally, Nickelback topped off this album with the controversal single "Never Again" which told the story of a young boy witnessing his father return home drunk and abusing his wife.
The story takes us through a series of issues arising (i.e. the mother trying to claim her bruises were simply injuries from falls and the boy eventually gorwing up into a teenager and getting into a fight with his father after taking more then he could stand.)
While "Too Bad" and "How You Remind Me" were aknowledged as some of Nickelback's most popular songs "Never Again" became arguably the most controversal and the original music video was banned from air, with the footage from their live concert DVD "Nickelback: Live At Home" being shown instead.
I gave this album a perfect score for showcasing songs where Nickelback hit the nail right on the head and couldn't possibly have done any better. Other notable songs are "Woke Up This Morning", "Just For" the remake of their 1996 smash "Just Four" and the closing hit "Good Times Gone"
It is amazing to listen to this album and hear just how much Nickelback have altered and played around with new styles in comparision to their old school heavy, rock'n'roll showcased on this album. One that will always be near the top of my list for greatest rock albums in history.
