Chapter 11: Mysteries in Halloween
“Now THAT is something I could possibly never think of.” Shade said. “I mean, for real!”
“Well, it’s true.” Florence said. “I just want to have time for… well, us. And I mean, just us; nothing more, nothing less.”
“Gee, I wish I came up with that.”
“Oh come on, you know you’re sweet too, Shade.”
“But not as much as you!”
“See, you were just being nice!”
“Are not!”
“Are too!”
Florence and Shade were having a playful fight until Shade thought he heard somebody familiar. It turned out to be Jake, running over and gasping for his breath.
“I… I…” He couldn’t say anything but that.
“Uh… guess I… uh… forgot to tell you where to meet us… right?” Shade said nervously.
“You think?” Jake said, falling backward on the fluffy snow. “I thought I was gonna be late… so I ran around every room, wondering where you and Flo were.”
“Well… a-at least you… found us?”
“Yeah. I guess. Soo… where IS Rose?”
Florence looked around. “We’re not sure. Shade and I have been having a whole lot of time for us… We thought she’d be here by now.” When she thought she heard her, she decided to tell her why she was brought here in the first place. “Ummm, I’ll be right back.” Flo ran over to where Rose was, leaving Shade and Jake alone, once again.
OoOoOoOoOoO
“What?” Kay asked. “Something wrong?”
“Well… I… I don’t have a family.”
Leah and Kay gasped sadly and with almost complete terror.
“But, but… what about all those stories about your mom and dad? And your siblings?” Leah wondered aloud.
“Those were all true. But I didn’t want to be the only one that doesn’t have a real family.”
“Oh… what happened?”
“The Dark Dragon, that’s what.” Madisen paused to sigh. “He took away the ones I loved most. I’m pretty lucky to be a survivor, actually. And I’ve been here since… well, a long time ago.”
“Oh.” They both said sighing with sympathy.
“We feel really bad, Madisen.” Kay said.
“Yeah… Why didn’t you tell us before? We could’ve helped you.” Leah added.
“Mmhmm… keeping secrets isn’t a good thing.”
“It’s not really a secret… I just don’t like looking back at my past. It’s… well, not all that great.”
“But come on… We’re your friends.”
“We’ll always be there for you.”
“No matter what!”
Madisen cheered up. “And that’s the next best thing!”
They all did a group hug. Kay and Leah tried their best not to make Madisen feel so lonely or sad. She knew she could always count on her friends though.
OoOoOoOoOoO
“Rose!” Florence said when she had come over. “Sorry! Did I forget to tell you where to meet me and Shade?”
Surprisingly, she watched Rose slowly shake her head. “No, actually. You didn’t forget; I was just running late. You know how the Huntsman and Huntsdad are. They just wouldn’t let me go to sleep.”
Flo rolled her eyes. “I know the feeling. I was only able to get away with it because of the fight I ‘had’ with Shade.
“Yeah, I heard that from Tyler.”
“Bleh, at least you’re not stuck doing a mission tomorrow.”
“Yeah, but I rather would, actually.”
“Oh.”
“Anyway, why did you want us to meet here?” Rose paused and looked over. “And is that Jake talking to Shade?”
“You’ll get both questions answered soon!” Florence just replied, taking Rose’s hand and both headed over to where the two boys were.
OoOoOoOoOoO
Roxy crept around the quiet hallway, looking over at both Rose and Florence’s rooms; the two both sound asleep.
“That’s strange.” The boy next to her said. “Isn’t it weird how Rose and Florence are sleeping like their dead? And this early too?”
“Come on, Chris.” Roxy rolled her eyes. “Florence is always asleep this early. I mean, did you ever meet someone in your life that gets up at three or four in the morning every day?” Chris shook his head. “I didn’t think so.”
“But look at it this way, sis. Florence is always wandering about before she goes to bed. And Rose drops by her room every night and they talk for like… hours… that is, until Flo gets tired.” He said.
“Guess you didn’t heard about the battle Flo got into today, huh?”
“I did… but is it still kind of weird?”
“… Listen to me, little bro. I experienced that fight; I watched them battle… it was so intense that you probably wouldn’t believe it.”
“Oh yeah? If it was that harsh, then why does it look like Florence hardly got a scratch?”
She thought about her Chris’s naïve thoughts. And for once, she thought her little brother was right!
“Well, that is pretty strange.”
“Exactly. Don’t you think Flo and Rose are trying to hide something?”
“Well… m-maybe. But I don’t want them to get into trouble with Huntsdad.”
“Ooh, there’s a nice side in ya, sis?”
“Oh, shut up, Chris.” His sister rolled her eyes and talked with such sour sarcasm.
OoOoOoOoOoO
“So… you’re saying that… me and Jake… need more time together?”
Rose, Shade, Jake, and Florence all had themselves plopped down and sitting on the soft and fluffy snow while in a circle that they formed to have a brief discussion.
“Exactly!” Shade said. “You guys obviously need a little moment to talk.”
“But the Huntsman and Huntsdad have always been telling me how I act up.” Rose said.
“Well, forget about them!” Florence rolled her eyes. “They just want us to do a good job in our missions and get things done.”
“But you’re one of the best people in the Huntsclan!”
“Come on, that doesn’t prove anything. So I’m the one that’s always trusted… but they sure have been suspicious about some things by now.”
“Even if you are pretty good with getting away with things.” Shade mumbled.
“Not helping…” Florence said softly.
Rose sighed. “Well, I guess.”
“Besides, ever since you’ve lost this time with him, you’ve been acting up a lot more than you even used to.” Florence brought up. “I noticed.”
“And in order to do better and be well-trusted, this is proof that you never wanted this.” Shade added.
“Of course I didn’t. I never wanted any of this. I just thought it was for the best.”
“Does it seem like the best right now?”
“Well… no.”
“Exactly.”
Rose thought for a moment. “Eh.” She shrugged. “I guess you’re right. I really do miss Jake a whole lot all the time.”
“So if you do, spending time together in your dreams will be the next best thing other than seeing each other again.”
“Sounds pretty reasonable to me.”
“Then come on! We’re all together, so why not have this time to spend it with each other too?”
“Yeah!”
When Florence wasn’t looking, Shade turned a specific direction, bent over, and picked up a handful of snow, rolled it into a perfect shape of a ball and shot it straightforwardly at Florence.
“Hey!” She said, turning around to see the snickering Shade; they were both standing up at this time. Then, she thought of a way to get him back. “Well, okay! You asked for it!” Florence did the same and threw a few at Shade, making direct hits.
Before they knew it, Shade and Florence had started a one-on-one snowball fight. Both of them ran around, chasing or running away from each other and trying to take their “opponent” down.
“Ow! That’s not fair! You have a good aim!” Shade said, grabbing more snowballs. “And you’re faster!”
“I know.” Flo smirked proudly as they both continued their playful battle.
“You want it that way, huh!”
“Oh yeah I do!”
Jake and Rose watched them, both with smiles brushing across their face. It was still an awkward moment between the two… All they could both hear were the excited, humorous laughters and echoes of Shade and Florence, doing what they both wished they were doing.
“You know.” Jake said breaking the silence. “We… we could do something.”
“Yeah.”
There was silence again.
“And… I just remembered… we never got to completely finish that snowman we did a couple of months ago.” Rose said.
“Yeah…”
“So… wanna give that a try?”
“Love to!”
OoOoOoOoOoO
“Huh, well… come to think of it, I think something was up with that battle that Florence had with Freezy.”
“How? Did their positions happen to change or something? You know… when you came back?”
Roxy and Chris were now having a discussion that they never thought they would ever have. They both sat themselves down outside the lair, feeling the breeze flow softly.
“I think so… I remember them both having their arrangement a little awkward when we returned… I don’t remember Florence having a dream charm with her either.”
“I remember Tyler told me that he gave that to her… I asked him why, but he wouldn’t tell me anything more.”
“Probably likes her or something. But I remember that Flo was always telling me that she does have a boyfriend… only she never sees him anymore.”
“Hmm, wouldn’t it be ironic if that dragon was her boyfriend?”
“Yeah. It would be…”
OoOoOoOoOoO
After a few hours…
“Weird…” Rose said. “This is exactly the way I remember we did it. So… how didn’t we finish it?”
“Well.” Jake said, examining it. “We forgot to give it a name.”
“Oh come on.” Rose grinned with amusement. “Since when did snowmen have a name?”
“Like Frosty the Snowman?” He said jokingly.
Rose giggled. “Oh, you.”
“Naw, I’m serious!” Jake said. “We need to give it a name!”
“How about Shade!” Shade called out.
“No, Florence!” Florence said.
“Shade!”
“Florence!”
“Shade!”
“Florence!”
“Yeah, I guess it shouldn’t be Shade.”
“Of course not, it should be Florence!”
“Hey! You were supposed to feel sorry for me and tell me that we were gonna name it Shade!”
“Didn’t fool me!”
“Hey!”
They both had run over where Jake and Rose were, taking a closer look at their creation.
“Heh… looks like a Freezy to me.” Florence teased.
“I thought you didn’t like the name I wanted!” Shade said.
“I said Freezy not Shade.” She giggled with more kid. “But they’re both real nice names still!”
“I thought so.” He teased.
“Sounds like you two had a fun time.” Jake said.
“You bet!” Florence grinned. “Nice snowman! Ever thought of giving it a name?”
“See? I told you!” Rose said.
“Fine, fine! So it needs a name.” Jake rolled his eyes. “Just gotta think of one then.”
“Yeah! I think it should be—”
OoOoOoOoOoO
“Florence! FLORENCE!”
“Huh?” Florence said, waking up when she felt someone shake her gently. “Whoa… w-what time is it?” She rubbed her eyes and sat up.
“It’s quarter to noon.” Roxy said eyeing her strangely. “Bet you had a pretty good sleep, huh?”
“Y-yeah…”
“Strange. You’re usually up before daybreak.”
“I know… I wonder why.”
Must’ve been the dream. Flo thought to herself. Then, realization struck in her head. “Wait… what did Huntsdad do about the daylight mission?”
“He postponed it…” Roxy rolled her eyes. “Huntsdad wouldn’t let me go on my own or with anybody else. I swear! I could totally ask him to take the entire Huntsclan and organization with me! But he still wouldn’t let me go. Not without you, that is.”
“Wow… he must trust me a whole lot then.” Florence mumbled aloud. “So, did he say anything else about missions or something?”
“Not really. All he’s been wondering if you’re really alright.”
“Strange… He’s usually never like this.”
“Tell me about it.”
“Soo… I guess I’ll just tell Huntsdad and the rest that I’m fine, rest assured. Then, I’ll probably head off somewhere.”
“You want me to tag along?”
“I don’t think you’d really want to… come.” Florence was thinking about visiting Shade and going to DISOM; she felt guilty about leaving the three of them in their dreams all of a sudden. Boy, he must be worried. “So… you don’t really have to.”
“Oh, okay. Just let me know if you need me then.”
“Alright.”
OoOoOoOoOoO
Shade, Jake, Ash, Al, and Kevin all went to the library on Halloween morning, searching through different books.
“So… Florence just suddenly left?” Ash said while everyone was searching through books.
“Yeah.” Shade said, confused. “She normally says goodbye.”
That was one of the good things about the DISOM school library; you could talk… And it was pretty huge too. Draco Island always wanted a specific place where there would be a huge collection of books full of… well, everything. You could find ways to mix some spells or maybe even find a history about the very first dragon… maybe even a book about gremlins. Basically, what I’m trying to say is that if you need to look up something, you’re bound to find it there.
“Well, think about it, though.” Kevin said as he flipped through pages. “What time was it when you all woke up?”
“Noon.” Jake and Shade said simultaneously.
“Yeah.” Shade said. “Me and Flo are always up before the sun even comes up!”
“Seriously…” Ash mumbled.
They all quieted down as they stacked piles of books on the side of their seat, skimming through glossaries, indexes, key terms, and anything that might’ve related to this mysterious thing.
“Hey! I think I found something!” Shade said. Everyone walked over and peeked over at the page that he was pointing at. He read the words fluently and clearly.
“It says, ‘the cornerstone of light is a rare, powerful essence that is only found in a very, say, secrete location in Draco Island. This so-called ‘radiance’ has originated the school called Draco Island’s School of Magic. Over the years, there have been lowly attempts on seeking the true power of this vivid keystone of illumination. Though only few have ever found out about these mysterious powers, some have said that it gives the ultimate power to any mortal that dare share the power of light on any equinox of the year. Others assume that it has something to do with the moon’s position; the light will give the handler’s definitive power on the night of a full moon at the stroke of precise midnight’.” He stopped to turn the page. “Ahem… ‘Until now, nobody beyond doubt knows the true purpose of this protective, strong fundamental nature… All that is known to most is the power to wield the protection of darkness and sinister forces’.” Shade stopped.
“Wow… that was interesting.” Al said. “I guess it’s true that it really holds another power, huh?”
“Yup.” Kevin nodded. “I think that’s why the Huntsclan really does want something from it.”
“But we still don’t know why!” Jake said.
“Well, we could ask Florence or Rose to find out.” Shade suggested. “They’re the only associations we know who might have any clue to the connection of this mystery.”
“True.” Jake commented.
“So… what do we do now?” Ash thought aloud.
“I say we find out what they’re trying to use it for.” Shade said. “But we can’t do it without help…”
“You sure they know?” Kevin asked.
“They could.”
“Probably.”
Suddenly, somebody familiar came in.
“Hi Shade!” Florence said as she entered and walked over to the table.
Shade just sat there, surprised…
End Chapter Eleven
Yup, the Halloweenie stuffs are SURE to be in chapter twelve. I'm sure. Anyway! I'd love it if you listen to this ramble thingerrr...
Yeah. I know you guys really love AUA. I'm glad with that! Buut, I know of this really great author. Yush, he's a fellow forum member; he has two characters in this story too. He goes by the name of "Shade Chaos". Recognize him? Good. XD Anyhoodles. I've read all of his stories and I have to say, they're really awesome. But there's one problem, only a few people read and review his work. You know, I feel really bad for him because he almost quit fan fics... you know, lack of reviews really disappointed him since... he works hard to make his fan fics real great. And they are; it's just that people never take the time to find out how great they really are. In fact, I could say that we both have the same writing style and quality... since for some reason, I think he and I are authors just the same; we do it for fun, but we really appreciate reviews.
I hope you know what I'm getting to here. I really feel bad for him when he only gets a review from me and/or Ash and nobody else. Cause you know, I get a good amount of reviews for AUA... and when I do, I actually feel pretty lousy. Soo... if you ever have the time, I'd recommend you read his stories and fan fics some time. They really are nice to read.
If you listened to that, you're a really respectful person! And you know... I might even think of keeping AUA on a pause... mwahaha. But hey, I'm tryin to show that I'm not the only author who deserves reviews. Some people need some boosting and appreciation too.
Thank you SO much if you read that!
