Chapter 8: Everything’s Worse
Cat ran home as fast as she could, to avoid what had just happened with her, Kel, and Jake. She wiped away her tears quickly and grabbed the key to her house, put it in the hole, and turned it. She twisted the doorknob and walked inside.
She threw her backpack next to the couch and sat down, sighing sadly. Her mom was right next to her…
“So, how was school today?” She asked her.
“Fine,” Cat replied dryly.
Cat then put a pillow from the couch in front of her face. She gave a muffled scream and let out her anger into that yell… Cat put down the pillow and looked down, upset.
“What’s wrong?” Her mom asked.
“It’s s… some… something. Just… something.” Cat sighed.
“Oh, what is it?”
“I… I don’t want to talk about it.”
“You sure?”
“Y… yeah…”
Cat grabbed her backpack and rushed up the stairs to her room. She closed the door, locked it, plopped herself on her bed, and screamed. This time, without a pillow to muffle the loud sound.
“Cat!” Her mom called out. “Don’t scream while your sister is taking a nap!”
Cat sighed exasperatedly. “Okay!”
She took out some stuff out of her backpack then started doing homework. Usually, she calls Kel… but right now was different. It was snowing lightly outside… but she didn’t feel like caring either. Suddenly her phone rang… Cat stood up and answered it.
“… Hello?”
“Cat?”
“Oh… hey Jake.”
“Listen, I’m sorry about earlier and—”
“Jake. Why did you kiss me? Because of that Kel hates me now probably…”
“Look, I just… I… I just can’t tell you…”
“Why? I just want an honest answer, Jake. It’s not a hard question.”
“I… I just c… can’t tell you.”
“I still don’t understand… Kel believed you, not me. Yeah, I know you guys have probably know each other for a long time so you two trust each other… but…”
“Yeah, I hate seeing you guys upset.”
“Then why did you—”
“Cat, I already told you. I just can’t tell you.”
“Fine, DON’T tell me.”
“I’m sorry… I wish I could but…”
“But what? You’re too scared?”
“No! It’s just… I don’t know.”
“Okay, forget I said that then…”
“Listen, I told Kel to meet me at Central Park with you tomorrow after school… I really do hate seeing you guys like this.”
“Jake, you know I can’t talk to Kel now… I told you, he probably hates me.”
“We’ll just see. I’ll… try and sort this out with you guys, okay?”
“If you say so… Well, I’m kind of busy with homework. So, do you mind calling me later?”
“Oh, nah. G’head… I gotta work on mine too.”
“Swell. Talk to you later, Jake.”
They both hung up then Cat picked up her pencil and started doing her homework again…

Tomorrow morning…
It was Tuesday now… and it was hopeless. Tomorrow was the winter dance… and instead of a pair going, two people are going, I guess.
“Cat!” Someone called out.
Cat turned around and saw one of her friends, Janet.
“Um, hey Jan. What’s up?” She asked.
“I totally heard about you and Kel. What happened? I mean, you’re always going off and telling me ‘Oh, I miss Kel’ or ‘Oh my gosh, all I can think about is Kel’ or… or… or even… ‘Do you think I’m really that good enough for him?’… Sheesh, that’s been getting a little… on my nerves lately. But I can understand, you know, it’s love and stuff… and I totally know that—”
“Jan…” Cat said. “… I don’t want to talk about him.”
“Seriously, why are guys like… not together now?” Jan asked.
“I kissed his best friend.” Cat said. Jan just stared awkwardly. “It’s a long story…”
“Look, it’s not like you guys just can’t kiss and make up, right? I mean, come on!” Jan said. “This is just the first argument. It just won’t change everything!”
Cat sighed. “Yeah I guess you’re right and—” She paused, thinking she heard something.
“Huh?” Jan asked.
“Shhh!” Cat said, lowering her voice. “Over here!”
She and Jan looked over at a room that a row of lockers was next to. There stood Jake, along with Trixie and Spud.
“You know, I can’t really help but wonder that that was your fault.” Spud said.
“It was.” Jake said.
“Then why’d you do it?” Trixie said.
“I don’t know! I just can’t tell anybody!” Jake said.
“Well, you just broke up a perfectly good couple, dude.” Spud said. “And they’re your best friends too…”
“You know, boy’s got a point.” Trixie said.
“Yeah, yeah… but.” Jake had noticed that Cat and Jan were watching then somehow shifted the topic into something. “And did you hear what Kel said about Cat? It’s been going around the school!”
“What?” Trixie and Spud were confused.
“What!” Cat came over with Jan following close behind. “Are you telling me that Kel is saying something about me behind my back?”
“Y… yeah!” Jake lied. “He said you’re a cheater and a two timer for kissing me.”
“What! I did NOT kiss you, Jake. For your information, YOU kissed ME. Get the picture?” Cat said. “It’s bad enough you lied to him.”
“I’m serious.” Jake said. “Watch, after first period today, you’re gonna hear people talking about you. I bet.”
“Psh, in your dreams.” Cat said. “Forget it, I’m out of here. Come on, Jan.”
“Uh, alright.” Jan said, following her friend.
“Dude, why did you just lie to Cat?” Spud asked after the two left.
“Because… it’s something I have to do.” Jake said. “I need you guys to do something for me.”
“What? Spread a rumor about Kel saying that Cat is a liar and a two timer for her kissing you?” Trixie said.
“Well… yeah…” Jake said. “It’s just something I have to do.”
“I hope you know what you’re doing, boy.” Trixie said. She and Spud left to do the ‘business’. Jake was confused… he sighed. He didn’t even understand himself anymore.
OoOoOoOoOoO
After first period…
Cat and Jan were walking out of History that time and as they were talking, someone came up to Cat.
“How could you do that to Kel?” The random stranger said. He turned out to be someone by the name of Tom, one of Jan’s friends.
“Do what?” Cat asked, confused.
“Kiss Jake! Kel practically took back revenge from you by saying that you’re a lying, two-timing, evil witch.” He said.
“What!” Cat said, furiously. “Jake was right. Forget trying to forgive him, I’m gonna give Kel a piece of my mind…”
“Don’t you think that might be a bad idea?” Jan said.
“I’m gonna take my chances.” Cat said.
OoOoOoOoOoO
At the lunchroom…
After two more periods, Cat had been hearing more about the same story. How Kel was furious that Cat had ‘apparently’ kissed Jake, then he decided on taking out his anger by getting revenge on her, so he went around telling his friends what happened and started calling her either a liar, a two-timer, or some sort of name…
Cat was also furious by then, thinking about telling Kel that she was sorry. Sorry for something she didn’t even do… but this time, she took her chances.
When they both came across each other, their eyes met… having a mixture of hate and misery.
“Why would you say something like that about me?” Cat started out with anger.
“Say what?” Kel asked.
“Don’t play stupid on me! You know you went around telling your friends what happened—which was a gag, by the way—then calling me a lying, two-timing witch!”
“What! I didn’t call you that!”
“Yes you did! Jake said so! The whole school did! Now everybody’s acting like they hate me or I’m some sort of hater. All because of you’re upset about something I didn’t even do.”
“You’re a liar! You’re just saying that because I got mad about you and Jake kissing. And Jake said so himself; YOU kissed HIM.”
“I. DID. NOT! Do you know that Jake is lying to you! Because you should know by now that—”
“Jake? My best friend? He never lied to me!”
“Oh, sure take his side! You can’t even trust the fact that your girlfriend is telling the truth!”
“Well whom am I supposed to believe?”
“Me! But it’s like you don’t care anymore and—”
“I did care. Until you decided to do something like that.”
“I can’t believe you’d actually think that! Then call me names the day after something like this happens. But look… you know what? Forget it. Just forget it.” Cat shook her head. “I’m not talking to you again.”
“Neither am I.”
She walked off to a table far from where Kel was. He did the same. Jake watched the whole thing… now his guilt was building and he really wanted to burst out that the Huntsman is making him tear them apart.
Jake sat down with Trixie and Spud.
“Dude, that was harsh…” Spud said. “I don’t think I’ve ever seen anybody fight like that.”
“Neither have I.” Jake said.
