Chapter 4: Returning the Favor
“Eh, well… actually, it’s weird,” remarked Shade, “You… kinda just… missed him.”
“Oh really?” Sherlyn asked with her eyes a little widened.
“Yeah,” Florence chimed in with a seemingly cheerful nod. “But they couldn’t have gotten that far back to New York.”
“They?” Sher questioned, scratching her head.
“Yup. Jake isn’t going there alone,” He added, “But he went to travel along with a friend.”
“So I guess we could find him there?” Kimper made sure.
“Mmhmm!” replied Shade and Florence said concurringly, turning to each other to make a very cynic glance. In the end, they both just shrugged and pretended that that awkward moment was an everyday thing- and it kind of was, actually.
“Well, would you guys like some help on getting there, though?” Shade asked, still acting polite as he could possibly be.
“If you… don’t mind,” Tinker and the rest sounded a little shy. They turned a little withdrawn when they noticed how nice the two were acting.
“Of course!” Florence grinned just as courteously. “Nice dog, by the way!” She pointed at Vixen, who was panting softly with his tongue out and his outlook very spunky.
“Actually,” Sherlyn said as she glanced at their adorable-looking beagle, “He’s… not a dog.” She made short glimpses around as Sher saw the two looking over at her in such interest.
OoOoOoOoOoO
Way, way outside in the front of the school was where four people were having an enjoyable time having a war; well, a snowball fight that is.
“Darn it!” Ash cried when a small, circular chunk of ice had hit her in the leg. After being stricken with it in a very fast speed, it had caused her to drop the balls of snow that she had ready in her hand.
“I hate my throwing!” Amanda exclaimed as she hid behind their neatly done snow fort. “I think we might need to work on it anyway.”
“I can throw, alright.” Ash said as she followed Amanda as the boys, Kevin and Al, were successfully making shots at them. “I’m just not fast enough!”
“I’m fast, but… my throwing stinks.” Amanda sighed. “Too bad Flo isn’t here. She’s normally really good at this stuff.”
“I know.” Ash said, making an unbeaten strike at Kevin. “HAH! Got you!”
“That was a lucky shot!” Kevin just said, throwing snow back at her, laughing as he saw her reaction. “See?”
“Sheesh, you guys are loud,” Kay said as she came over with Leah. She stopped and took a look, noticing that something was going on. “Ooh! A snowball fight! Can I join?”
“You good at throwing?” Amanda asked, cringing as Kevin hit her this time. “I’m gonna get you for that!!”
“You know you still love me!” He grinned.
“Well, I can… a little… I guess.” Kay scratched her head.
“GOOD ENOUGH!” Ash called out, trying to hit Al. Eventually, she did, but only making one or two triumphant ones.
“So that means I can join?” inquired Kay, watching as snowballs flung back and forth.
“YES!” Amanda and Ash called out at the same time, getting hit simultaneously.
“You can too, Leah!” Amanda added.
“I think I’ll just watch,” Leah said with a grin. “This’ll be pretty interesting."
Kay rolled her eyes. “What’s THAT supposed to mean?”
“Just get in here and help us!” Ash said a little impatiently.
“Okay, okay! I’m going!”
OoOoOoOoOoO
“He’s not?” Shade asked. “Then… what…
is he?”
“You know those reindeer you always hear about in Christmas stories?” Tinker started off.
“Like with Santa and his reindeer; Dasher, Dancer, Prancer…
Vixen?” Sherlyn added with importance to show the starkness being said. She bent down and showed them a realistic dog collar that had the name ‘Vixen’ on it.
“So… let me get this straight.” Florence said, pointing at all three of them one at a time. “You guys… are not really kids?” They all shook their heads slowly. “And this,” She pointed at Vixen, “is really not a beagle?”
“Nope,” Kimper said, “We’re actually elves from the North Pole. We’ve been sent out by Santa to find the American Dragon.”
“Ohhh.” The two nodded in realization.
“I always knew I heard about that type of stuff,” Shade muttered. “I’m glad I’m not a non-believer.”
“We can tell you’re not,” Sherlyn said with a grin. “In fact, I think we’ve heard about you… You’re… umm… Shade, right?” He just nodded in shock. “Yup, you’re in Santa’s nice list!!”
“Wow… h-how’d you know that?” Florence was even more taken aback. “And you guys happen to know who I am too… do you?”
“Since we know who Shade is, I guess we can say that you’re,” Tinker thought for a moment, “Florence, right?” They all waited for a nod but they knew that she was probably too astonished to even speak. “We kind of figured, since… well, we kind of know that you guys hang around a lot.”
“YES. Amazing!” Shade said, putting his hands together. “I knew we forgot to introduce ourselves; that was what I
thought we missed out when I thought of something significant to say.” He moved his head up and down gradually.
“Anyway, you kind of know by now that we’re not here for that…
right?” Kimper said.
Sherlyn went on without letting them answer the question, knowing that they probably weren’t that dumbfounded. “Well, like we said, we’re trying to get the American Dragon because something terrible happened in Santa’s Workshop up in the North Pole.”
“Sounds horrible,” Florence sighed softly as she titled her head slightly, also causing the pink santa-like hat she had on her head to move. “I can see why Santa chose him to help you guys out.”
“Yeah.” Shade said. “But anyway, we could probably lead you guys over to NYC or maybe try and catch up to them?”
“Sure! Then we could give you something in return.” Sherlyn said.
“Oh no, no, no… it’s alright.” Flo said. “You don’t really have to and—”
“Really, you guys have been real polite,” Tinker interrupted, speaking gratefully as they all started nodding. “If we don’t, we’ll probably feel guilty.”
“You sure?” asked Shade. “I’m sure you guys wouldn’t really have no reason to.”
“Believe me,” Kimper said. “We owe you a bunch.”
“If you say so.” Florence grinned. “Now, let’s get over there.”
OoOoOoOoOoO
“I thought you said it wasn’t going to be that cold outside!” complained Cat as she and Jake started heading up into the air and gliding through the clear, blue sky. There had seemed to be clouds floating below them, so they were obviously in a high elevation.
“We haven’t been out here for more than a few minutes and you start complaining?” Jake rolled his eyes.
“Easy for you to say.” She pouted. “I love winter and all, but I never could handle the cold that well… at least if it’s below zero out here!”
Jake and Cat, in truth, had really been flying for only twenty minutes with the temperature outside being around twenty degrees. It was cold enough that they could see their breath, but it wasn’t that chilly that you could die. For some reason, it might’ve seemed for some other people.
“At least we’re almost out of Draco Island.” Jake said, pointing above the river that shone between the thin clouds that couldn’t conceal as much as the thicker, cumulus ones. “We can practically make it to New York in no time!”
OoOoOoOoOoO
“Take that!” Kay said making more than about three throws that had hit both Al and Kevin. Amanda and Ash were looking over at her in shock as she dominated the boys with complete victory.
“Wow… you ARE good,” Amanda said with bewilderment in her voice.
“Now THAT was a complete turn-around!” exclaimed Leah as she congratulated the girls.
“I guess we shouldn’t always depend on Florence, huh?” Ash said. “Ow!” She turned around and, well, speak of the devil, there she stood with a snowball in her hand.
Flo grinned. “Well, I guess you can’t say that, can you,
Ashy?”
“Nobody calls me that!” She said, shuddering at the sound of that name. “I always hated that.”
“Whatever you say!” Florence said. “I’ll be over somewhere if you guys need me… or if you guys would rather me hitting you with a snowball!” She said, striking everybody with successful shots. Sounds of ouches were being echoed around the area until Flo stopped and heard someone calling her name.
“Florence!” Shade called out, trying to get her attention. “Can you come over here?”
“Oops! Got to go, guys!” She said, waving goodbye as she ran over.
“Bye Flo!”
“Have fun or something!”
“See ya!”
“We’ll see about another game later!”
“Take care!”
Eventually, Florence had made it over to where Shade was. “So, are we going to get started or what?”
“Yeah, I guess.” Sherlyn said. She and the twins were no longer kids, but their original selves- elves; while Vixen had reverted back into his reindeer-self, having a unique shiny red sleigh bell and green reins on his back. The three were all small enough to be able to fit so they all decided to ride on him. Shade would convert to dragon form and bring Florence along with him… guess you could say that.
“Everybody set?” Florence said.
“Yup!” Everyone said, a bark coming from Vixen. After realizing that he was no longer a dog but a reindeer, he just grinned proudly as everyone looked at him awkwardly.
“Well let’s get over there!” Sherlyn said after playing around with the funny-sounding reins that made a noise which made her giggle.
“I’ll just lead the way,” Shade said voluntarily.
“Good. That means I’ll just get Vixen to follow you!” Tinker said.
OoOoOoOoOoO
“Whoa!” Cat said after she and Jake had made it to Times Square. “That was fast!”
“Told you we were almost there,” Jake said.
They both beat their wings a few more times then landed at a nearby alley that was, of course, covered in ice- so they had to be a little cautious with their steps until they got to the sidewalks of 42nd street. After regressing back to their human forms, they had continued walking around near the busy street. Sooner or later, they both had gone through Central Park and had seen the snow that blanketed its once very fertile and green land.
“So, what do you think you want to do when you go see your parents?” Jake asked.
“Well, my sibs will probably start asking me about everything, so I guess I might tell my stories about life in DISOM then I’ll probably help out with the Christmas tree like I always do.” Cat said. “Everyone promised that they’d wait until I get home to do that; I can never afford to miss a thing!”
“Sounds cool,” He said, “I hope my mom doesn’t miss me that much and starts hug-choking me and all that sort of nonsense she always does during vacations.”
“I heard from Trixie and Spud one time that your dad even tells those ‘man stories’ that you guys are supposedly believed to be doing.” Cat rolled her eyes.
“Oh believe me, it is NOT personal.” Jake laughed at his own remark. “But boy can he be a great dad sometimes.”
“I see…” She put her hands above her elbow, shivering even though she had a jacket on.
OoOoOoOoOoO
“It’s so cold!” Florence whined as she clung on to Shade.
“You should see the temperatures up in the North Pole,” Sherlyn said as she petted Vixen while he flew. “Practically nobody but us and the rest of the people in the village live there.”
“I bet I would die being there for one second,” Flo grumbled.
“It’s not SO bad,” Shade remarked after a short second of silence formed and they had gone up into a higher distance from the ground. “In fact, I like this kind of weather!”
“Easy for YOU to say!” She said. “I guess I’m the only cold one here!”
“Yeah I bet.”
“Shade!!”
“Okay, so I’m… cold… well… erh, not really but…”
“Just keep flying!!”
“That works too!”
They soared through the sky without saying a word whilst it had been Shade who had leaded the way to NYC. Like Cat and Jake, it didn’t exactly didn’t take that long for them to actually arrive there. Before they had gone further through Manhattan, the three had converted themselves into kids, Vixen was transformed into the same beagle form he was in, Shade had gone back to his human form, and… well, Florence was fine- unless you count the fact that she was freezing.
“So, I guess we can run into them if we either go to Central Park or stop by Jake’s house,” Shade said. “I guess… right?”
“All I care about is getting some warmth!” Florence complained. “Can I hug you, Shade?”
“Well why not!” He said. “Why don’t I do that?”
“You’re the best!” She said as Shade put his left arm around her, both of them continuing their ‘mission’ to get to their destination and meet the two- along with the three and Vixen, of course.
“That’s so sweet!” Tinker whispered quietly, taking the responsibility to hold the leash that had held Vixen back.
“SHHH!” Kimper said.
“We heard that,” Florence grinned as they all kept on walking.
“Yeah, don’t think we can’t understand that.” Shade added.
“But still!” Sher said. “You guys are like… SOOO cute together!” Shade and Florence glanced away from each other for a second, trying to hide their slight embarrassment. By the time that they had all maintained their composure, they had already arrived at the street where Central Park was.
“Hey! I remember that from the dream we had one time,” Florence muttered to Shade but more likely to no-one-in-particular. “Only actually
being in Central Park is much better!”
“Funny how that works huh?” He said as the two thought they had seen somebody familiar. “Guys, wait.” Shade pointed over at Jake who was walking around mindlessly while Cat hung around by the bridge and gingerly placed her finger on the smooth ice that was once a small reservoir.
“I think that’s them,” Florence said as they all walked over. The bark of Vixen had reasoned for Jake’s startle as he turned around and had seen two familiar faces along with four unknown ones.
“Shade, Florence… what are you doing here?” Jake asked. After hearing that last shriek, Cat had quickly made her way over.
“Well, it’s a long story…” Shade said as he took glances around the park.
“You see, we need your help,” Sher said. “You ARE the American Dragon… right?”
