Chapter 8: A History of Darkness
“I guess you can say the reason I know the cure for dark magic is because… well… I was born with dark magic.”
Jake, Rose, Kellen, and Miranda sat in a circle together. Miranda spoke calmly and firmly, despite the fact that she was admitting to being a dark sorceress.
“Dark magic has always run in my family, from my mom’s side… my dad never knew, but that doesn’t really matter, since Mom killed him when he found out….” Miranda fell silent for a moment, and her eyes darkened with anguish at the mention of her mother killing her father. Rose put a comforting hand on her shoulder.
“So your dark magic comes from your mother’s side of the family?” Lao Shi asked, careful to get all the details correct. Miranda nodded.
“That’s right. My ancestor… well, he made a deal with the devil, if you will. His sister had disappeared with the “bad guys”, and since she had been born with dark magic and not him, he made a deal with this… devil. He would hunt his sister, but only if the devil gave him dark powers, like hers.” “Devil?” “That’s the only word I can think of to describe him… but he did have a name.” Miranda took a deep breath, and her grip on Kellen’s hand tightened slightly.
“They called him Darkfire.”
Dead silence.
“Darkfire?” Rose whispered hoarsely. Miranda nodded, her eyes dark with misery. After a moment, she gently tugged her hand—her left one—out of Kellen’s hand. She cradled it to her chest for a moment, closing her eyes, and a brief shudder shook her body. Gritting her teeth, Miranda pulled a small vial of red liquid from her coat pocket, uncorked it, and drank. She threw away the empty vial and opened her fingers so Jake, Rose, Kellen, and Lao Shi could see her palm.
“Whenever the pain is really bad, I use that potion I made to soothe it… it makes the Mark go away. The liquid I just drank cancels that effect.”
Slowly, the Mark of Darkfire burned to life on Miranda’s palm. Rose took her hand, examining it. She nodded.
“When Darkfire gave me the Mark, I had it on my left palm to, remember?” she turned to Jake. “Talk about coincidences.”
“Miranda, are you the only one in your family with black hair and brown eyes?” Lao Shi asked suddenly, looking up from the dusty leather book he had been reading. Miranda blinked in surprise, but didn’t ask.
“Yes. My father didn’t look like me, and he had no family. Everyone that I’ve seen from my mother’s side of the family have red hair and green eyes, even my cousins.”
Lao Shi nodded thoughtfully. “I believe I know why.”
He began to read:
“During the time of Darkfire, during the travels of Kage, Kya, and Haku, there was a gap of space where the small band was joined by another, a young woman with short black hair and expressive dark brown eyes.
Her name was Nika.
Her story was an interesting one. She had at one time been the Dark Servant of Darkfire, not by choice, but because of a promise of blood made by one of her ancestors in the beginning of Darkfire’s reign. Upon her right shoulder she bore the Mark of Darkfire, a crooked D with a lightning bolt through it. She had rebelled against Darkfire and fled, joining Kage, Kya, and Haku on their mission, determined to help in any way she could.
Throughout her travels with the group, it is said that Nika and Haku grew extremely close; perhaps they were in love. No one would ever know.
Just as Nika’s life seemed to be happy, just as she seemed content, loved, she sensed Darkfire was closing in on her friends, and Kage had not yet mastered all the magics of the world. This took place before the slaying of Kya, the beginning of a chain of unexplainable events that helped the band survive for as long as they did before the final confrontation.
As time passed, Nika’s personality began to change; she became quieter, more thoughtful, as thought contemplating something that once done could not be reversed. She never told anyone of her thoughts during this time, not even Haku. She began reading texts that fully explained the ways of the Dark Servants, searching for something; what it was, her friends did not know.
And then, one day, she went through with her plan.
It was Haku who found her, dead by a stream, with no mark upon her body except for the Mark, which had dimmed. She had killed herself using dark magic, magic that she had not tapped into since her abandonment of Darkfire, and it had killed her. Kya, Kage, and especially Haku were distraught, and she was buried alongside the stream where she had been found, the reason why she had taken her life a mystery.
Kya, Kage, and Haku continued their quest. There was nothing else they could do.
It did not escape their attention, however, that during the time after Nika’s death, Darkfire weakened. He seemed unsure of himself, more susceptible to mortal wounds, and his search for the three lessened considerably. He struggled with his dark magic, and though he later recovered from his brief weakness, Kya, Haku, and Kage had used this time to train even harder.
Perhaps Nika had done what she had for a reason after all.”
Lao Shi closed his book and looked at Miranda, who shrugged helplessly.
“I’m sorry, I really am, but I don’t understand what Nika has to do with me,” she said.
Lao Shi nodded. After a moment, he spoke.
“What no one knows is that Nika had a brother… a flame-haired young man with poisonous green eyes. His name was Kehito. He was extremely jealous of Nika, because she had dark powers, and therefore could serve Darkfire as a Dark Servant. So when Nika turned away from Darkfire, he offered Kehito a deal… he would give Kehito dark powers, as long as he hunted Nika. Of course, Kehito agreed.” Lao Shi smiled at Miranda. “If he had not, you would not be here, and you would not have dark powers.”
Stunned silence.
“Jesus,” Kellen whispered hoarsely. Miranda trembled. Jake turned to her.
“Your mom’s trying to revive Darkfire, isn’t she?” he asked softly.
Tears welled in Miranda’s eyes, and she bowed her head. A few tears escaped and streaked down her cheeks.
“Yes.”

Chapter 9: The Revival Spell
The black cat sat up, mewing softly as Miranda carefully opened the door; she paused to scratch the cat behind her ears, making the cat purr softly with contentment.
“Hey, Raffi. You need to stay quiet, okay girl? Mom doesn’t need to know I’m home yet.” Miranda tickled Raffi’s nose before silently shutting the door behind her, checking to make sure it was unlocked in case she needed to make a hasty retreat. Raffi sprang lightly onto Miranda’s shoulders, purring softly, and comforted by the light weight Miranda walked deeper into the house.
On her left hand, the Mark flashed to life.

“I don’t like this.”
Jake glanced over at IronHand, stretching his wings to their full length. “I know you don’t, but Miranda volunteered.” “I still don’t like this. Compared to her mother, Miranda’s defenseless.”
Lao Shi sighed. “I have to agree with Kellen, young dragon. Miranda’s mother is a skilled dark sorceress; she knows what she’s capable of. Miranda has only just recently started using her powers.” “At least it’s better then nothing!” Rose immediately came to her friend’s defense.
“Perhaps,” Lao Shi murmured. But deep inside, he did not believe what he said.

Raffi stopped purring.
The steady sound being so suddenly cut off made Miranda pause. Raffi tensed on her shoulder, claws digging into her coat but not piercing her shoulder. “What is it, girl?”
Raffi didn’t hiss, but her muscles tensed beneath her sleek black fur and her tail lashed uneasily from side-to-side, but she never moved from Miranda’s shoulder. Miranda lifted one hand, gently stroking Raffi’s head, and realized that the cat’s ears were flat against her sleek skull.
Something’s wrong. Raffi can sense it, Miranda realized.
“Good girl,” Miranda whispered shakily.

Selena didn’t both trying to track down Miranda. She knew her daughter would come back soon enough; no use wasting a perfectly good tracking potion on her. Besides, if she did return, that stupid cat would let Selena know; the beast was extremely fond of Miranda, more or less because Miranda had defended it from Selena, convincing her mother to let her keep it. Selena still hated it.
Shaking her head, Selena turned back to the cauldron she was standing over. Uncorking a vial, she poured the ash she had recovered from the cemetery into the liquid within, making it spark and bubble. Next she pulled out the Dark Potion. She turned the vial in her fingers for a moment, studying the dark purple liquid it contained, before uncorking it and pouring it into the cauldron. It made a loud hissing sound, and the liquid sputtered smoke weakly into the air, turning a jet black color. Selena nodded. She turned back to the old spell book.
“Spirits of the damned be risen, shadows of the cursed be freed; your master has awakened, and you must do his bidding,” she chanted. Her eyes flashed a bloody red color, and agony exploded within her as her Mark burned to life.

Miranda gasped, doubling over as pain assaulted her. She cradled her left hand to her chest, whimpering. Raffi sprang onto the table, mewing worriedly. She wound around Miranda’s legs, purring, and let out a yowl of alarm when Miranda collapsed. She crouched over her owner, gently licking her cheek, occasionally mewing softly in worry.
Miranda looked weakly at her cat.
“Raffi… Get… Get to the…”
She passed out.
Raffi stared at her still owner for a moment, then streaked out of her kitty door and into the road, yowling, and was scooped up by Rose, who had sprang down to grab the cat as she ran out.
“What’s happening?!”

Jake, IronHand, and Lao Shi remained on their perches above while Rose tried to calm a distraught Raffi. They exchanged worried looks.
“That can’t be good…”
At that moment a beam of pure black energy smashed through the roof of Miranda’s home. Just as before, it smashed into the moon, but it didn’t turn red. The whole sky turned black, the moon and stars a pale gray. The whole world was plunged into darkness, and as the beam faded away it left only a few wisps of smoke in the sky. Rose’s blue eyes were filled with terror when she looked up at Jake, Lao Shi, and IronHand, giving a Sin City feel to the moment. Raffi squirmed out of her grasp and ran back into the house, mewling desperately. IronHand straightened as a realization surged through him, and a stricken cry escaped him.
“Miranda!”
