Chapter 13: Love’s Sacrifice
“IronHand!” “I’m thinking! I’m thinking!”
Huntsgirl moaned and looked back up to where Jake was. IronHand’s thinking was taking to long! If they didn’t do something soon, Jake would die!
But there’s nothing we can do! Unless one of us magically sprouts wings, there’s no way we can help Jake!
Huntsgirl hated being helpless, especially when she couldn’t help someone she loved, and within her despair anger began to grow. It grew stronger and stronger, until all her despair had drained out of her body, and she pulsed with anger. Her eyes were like blue steel.
“You know what you must do.”
Huntsgirl closed her eyes as the voice whispered in her head. “Yes,” she murmured. “I know…” “Rose?”
Instead of responding, Huntsgirl raised one hand. Her eyes flashed electric blue; a jet of white magic shot from her fingertips, smashing into Darkfire’s chest. The demon let out a roar of pain and disbelief, releasing Jake, who fell and hit the ground with a dull thud; IronHand turned to Huntsgirl, eyes wide.
“What it the world…?” “Go to Jake! I’ll distract Darkfire!” “But…” “GO!”
IronHand darted out of the trees to Jake’s side as Darkfire lumbered to face Huntsgirl; its face was contorted in a snarl, its eyes the very pits of hatred.
“Kya.”
Huntsgirl smirked beneath her mask. “Name rings a bell.”
“You live.”
Huntsgirl’s hands clenched into fists. “Why are you doing this? Why do you like hurting people?”
Instead of responding, Darkfire shot a beam of red energy from his mouth, and Huntsgirl quickly whipped up a shimmering shield to block it. How was she doing this? She didn’t have powers!
Unless…
Flashback
Kya frowned, focusing on the spell. Magic didn’t come as naturally to her as it did to her mate, but she wanted to learn. She closed her eyes, focusing with all her strength.
She felt it; a steady coolness that washed over her. White magic sparked at her fingertips, ready to do her bidding. Kya smiled.
It might not be much at the moment, but she was learning. That was all that mattered.
End flashback
Huntsgirl quickly peered around her shield, anxiously searching for Jake. He was still down; IronHand crouched over him, trying to wake him. He must have still been weak from Darkfire. The battle Huntsgirl was fighting was to close to Jake; any minute Darkfire could lose interest in her and try to finish off Jake and IronHand…
… Like he was now…
Quickly summoning magic that she somehow possessed, Huntsgirl shot another beam of white magic at Darkfire; it crashed into his back, making him arch forward and roar. He whirled to face her.
“You dare challenge me?” it roared.
“Oh…” Huntsgirl stepped back slightly. “I dare.” She turned and ran into the woods.
“Rose!”
Huntsgirl nearly skidded to a halt at the sound of Jake’s voice, relief flooding her body; he was okay!
She couldn’t stop, though, because Darkfire was following her, away from the clearing into the woods.
Away from Jake! Huntsgirl realized. That’s it! Ignoring Jake’s cries, she ran deeper into the trees, leading Darkfire away from him, running as fast as her legs allowed. She ducked low-slung branches and sidestepped bushes, her lungs beginning to burn, but still she pushed on, bursting into a clearing. Up above in the bloody sky, the moon glowed a light red.
She knew Darkfire was behind her; not only because of the mark, but because she could sense him, but she was unprepared when a dark claw lashed out, smashing into her legs and sending jolts of agony through her body. Her legs crumbled beneath her and she fell with a cry.
Huntsgirl struggled to stand, but her legs would not support her. She collapsed to the ground as Darkfire loomed over her, and all the magic in the world couldn’t save her now.
Darkfire was so close that Huntsgirl expected to be experiencing wave after wave of pain, but instead a gentle coolness washed over her. Raising her hand, tugging off her glove, she saw that the mark on her palm was no longer blood red, but white, and instead of pain she felt cool. And she understood.
Her destiny was not to slay the American Dragon… it was to sacrifice herself for him, and for the world, just as Kya before her had.
She had been Kya. She knew that now.
Quietly, Huntsgirl accepted her fate. She looked up at Darkfire; he leered down upon her.
“Are you afraid, Light Maiden? Are you afraid to die?”
Huntsgirl’s eyes narrowed. “I wasn’t afraid before,” she said softly. “I’m not afraid now.”
“How brave.”
Her only regret was never telling Jake her feelings for him…
“Jake, I love you.”
Although he was not there, Jake heard her as clearly as if she were standing beside him, and with a jolt of terror he realized what it meant. “Rose! NO!”
Darkfire’s claws arched through the air. Agony exploded in Huntsgirl’s head as he hit his mark. Flame washed over her eyes, fading to leave nothing but darkness. Darkfire smirked as her body went limp and her eyes fluttered shut; he threw his head back and let out a roar of triumph.
Huntsgirl was dead.

Don't blame yourself. Sad endings are usually the ones with the best stories. Good job. I really look forward to the next chapter

Chapter 14: The Light of Kage
IronHand and Jake burst through the trees into the clearing, but it was already too late. Darkfire had completed his task, and throwing his head back he parted its massive jaws in a roar of pure triumph.
“No,” IronHand rasped.
Something seemed to collapse within Jake. Seeing Huntsgirl’s body only made it real—Huntsgirl—Rose—was dead. She was dead, and he hadn’t been there to save her. The light in his eyes flickered and dimmed; his whole body went lax. The whole world seemed to grow darker.
“Jake?” IronHand whispered. “Jake?”
IronHand’s voice was soft—barely above a whisper—but Darkfire slowly turned to face them, his red eyes brighter then before. He smirked, pointing one claw at Huntsgirl.
“How does it feel, Light Dragon? Tell me. You failed her again… like you did before. You failed her twice. You could not save her. How does it feel to know she trusted you, and you let her down?”
“Jake! Jake, don’t listen to him! There was nothing you could have done!”
“You are wrong…” Darkfire chuckled, an evil sound that sent liquid chills down IronHand’s spine. “He could have done something. He could have succeeded in preventing the Orb from being stolen. If it weren’t for the Orb, I wouldn’t be here right now.” He laughed again. “And now she is dead. You let her down, Light Dragon, just like before. She died to protect you… she died in vain. You cannot hope to defeat me now.”
For a moment Jake lay hunched against the ground, and wildly IronHand wondered if Darkfire’s taunts were having some effect on his friend. Then a shudder shook Jake’s body; he lifted his head, and rage and hatred flared in his dark eyes.
“You killed her!” Jake staggered to his feet. “You killed Rose! I loved her!”
“What are you going to do about it?” Darkfire smirked. “You are helpless, Kage, just like you were before. You have nothing left to fight for.”
“Don’t tell me that!” Jake roared. “I have everything to live for! Rose wouldn’t want me to just give up! And my name is JAKE!”
With this proclamation, Jake began to change. A white light burst from his body, enveloping him in a bright glow. IronHand raised one hand, blinking; Darkfire staggered back with a grunt.
“But what…?”
“He’s changing,” Lao Shi murmured; the old dragon limped to IronHand’s side. “The power within him has been awakened, and he is changing.” “I don’t understand.” “You will see.”
The light flashed, seeming to bath the whole world in its brilliant glow, then faded. IronHand slowly lowered his hand, gasping. “Jake?!”
Where Jake had stood was another dragon. He was twice Jake’s side, although he was built like Jake, and still had his black spikes upon his head. But these spikes were tipped with gold, not green, and golden spikes ran down the dragon’s neck and back to his tail. His claws were dark gray in color, his belly light purple, and when this dragon turned his head to glance at IronHand, one eye was green, the color of new fallen leaves, and one was black, with the same burning light that Jake’s had always possessed.
Jake had transformed. He was no longer the American Dragon. Now he was Kage. The Light Dragon. They were mixed, and IronHand saw both Kage and Jake in the Light Dragon. His body gave off gentle white rays. His eyes were narrow, filled with hatred as he glared at Darkfire.
“Surprised?”
It was Jake’s voice, and yet it was not Jake’s voice. It sounded like him, but deeper and older, more experienced, and Darkfire’s eyes widened with shock.
“You… you have activated your guardian!”
“Yes… I have.” Jake/Kage took one step towards the demon. “And now I will complete the task I left unfinished years ago! Trust me, Darkfire, this time you will not survive!”
The Light Dragon launched himself at Darkfire. The demon snarled, drawing back his lips, and shot a red energy beam from his mouth, which Jake/Kage quickly countered with white fire. The Light Dragon was stronger, angrier then he had been a thousand years ago, and his white fire defeated Darkfire’s beam, smashing into the demon’s chest.
Darkfire staggered with a gasped, catching himself before he fell, and his claws raked the Light Dragon’s shoulder. Jake/Kage jerked back with a roar, but before IronHand and Lao Shi’s disbelieving eyes, the wound healed itself.
“Whoa.” “This is incredible.” “Whoa. Again.”
Quickly IronHand shook off his shock and ran at Darkfire, turning into a mace and smashing into his legs. The demon went down with a roar, and as IronHand leaped back Jake/Kage swept past him.
“Thanks for the opening, Haku.” The Light Dragon’s voice was warm. “I knew I could count on you.”
His body glowing brighter then before, Jake/Kage raked his claws across Darkfire’s chest, glowing an angry bright white. Darkfire roared; the claw marks on his chest gushed a dark, sticky substance. It gushed darkness, not blood, because Darkfire was darkness. Jake/Kage attacked again, and Lao Shi and IronHand were blinded by the brilliant light.
When the light faded, Darkfire was gone. All that remained was a black scorch mark upon the earth. And Jake was back to his normal self, woozy.
After so long, Darkfire was finally dead.
End chapter 14
Green Comedian… yes, quite ironic, isn’t it? ;D
One more chapter, then the epilogue… I must say, this is my favorite story since “Because of Haley”.
Anyway… behold my crappy power-up scene, and please review!

Chapter 15: The Strongest Magic of All
“Rose…”
IronHand was pulled back to reality by Jake’s soft call. Looking up, he saw the young dragon kneel next to the dead girl, gently gather her in his arms. IronHand timidly made his way over to the pair, Lao Shi beside him, and the old dragon’s grief was one long, low moan at what he saw. IronHand touched Jake’s shoulder.
“I’m so sorry, buddy,” IronHand whispered. Jake looked up at him, his dark eyes sorrowful.
“I should have been there. I should have saved her. She led Darkfire away from me. She… she didn’t deserve this.” “Young dragon…” Lao Shi glided closer. “Why, G?” Jake’s voice shook. “I’m the stupid Light Dragon. I defeated Darkfire. But I…” he looked down at Rose. Her head lolled against his chest, her eyes serenely shut. “I couldn’t save Rose. I thought the Light Dragon was supposed to be able to do junk like that.” He bowed his head, holding Rose closer. “Why? I was given the power to defeat a great evil, and I can’t bring Rose back. It isn’t fair!”
“There are many things dragons cannot do, Jake,” Lao Shi murmured. “I’m sorry.”
“It isn’t fair,” Jake repeated, but there was no energy in his voice. IronHand bowed his head. Sorrow welled in his belly and clogged his throat, and hot tears stung at his eyes.
“Please,” Jake whispered hoarsely. “Please. Rose, I love you. Please…”
IronHand swiped furiously at his eyes with the back of his hand; and gasped in disbelief when he pulled his hand away. “Lao Shi,” he rasped. The old dragon gasped.
Jake was glowing again, but it wasn’t the blinding light that had summoned Kage. Instead it was a gentle glow, and the glow spread to envelop Rose so the pair was bathed in light. IronHand stared in shock. “What’s happening?” he whispered. “The strongest magic of all, Kellen.” “What?”
Lao Shi said nothing, and IronHand growled.
As he turned back to Rose and Jake, he saw the light slowly fade, and he could not stop the hope that welled up inside him. “Jake? What did you just do?” “I… I don’t know…”
A soft moan made IronHand jump. Lao Shi glided closer, and hope glowed in Jake’s eyes. “Rose?” “… Jake…”
Rose’s eyes opened slowly; she moaned again. Tears ran down Jake’s face. “Thank you,” he whispered hoarsely. “Thank you, thank you…” Joy welled in IronHand’s chest, and Lao Shi nodded.
“The strongest magic of all.”
“Jake.” Rose gently touched his cheek. “You’re crying.” “Yeah… well…” Jake swiped at his eyes. “It’s been pretty rough… with you… you know.” “I can imagine.” Rose closed her eyes briefly, but her hand never left Jake’s cheek. “I missed you.” “You weren’t even gone that long.” “I know.” Rose pulled her hand away and snuggled into Jake’s embrace. “I still missed you.”
