Shadows and Moonlight
Huntsgirl crouched on the building between 88 and 89, head angled slightly to the side as the gentle night breeze tugged at her braided hair; she rolled her shoulders and sighed, stifling a yawn with her hand.
88 wasn’t as discreet; he yawned largely and scowled, resting his chin in the palm of his hand. “Why are we out tonight, huh?” he grumbled. “It’s late as hell and nothing’s happening. It’s boring.”
“It’s Huntsman’s orders,” 89 pointed out quietly.
“So? It’s still pretty damn boring!”
Grunting softly, Huntsgirl rolled her eyes, shaking her head in quiet amusement and weariness as the two boys began to bicker, 89 staying loyally by Huntsman’s decision while 88 demanded they go home.
Out of the corner of her eye, she saw a flash of movement.
Her muscles tensed, her fingers tightening around her Hunts-Staff as her heartbeat hitched; Jake wasn’t patrolling tonight, he’d told her. So then who…?
She saw a flicker of dark hair—and knew. Slowly her muscles relaxed, though her heart continued to race; not from fear or anxiety, but from anticipation. She knew who was out tonight.
“88, 89.” Her voice, soft but firm, silenced the two. “You can go back. I can handle the rest of the patrol myself.”
88 looked more than ready to take her offer, but 89 hesitated; glancing at him, Huntsgirl tugged off her mask and smiled reassuringly.
“It’s alright. I’ll be fine.”
Wasting no time, 88 grabbed 89’s arm and began dragging him away, babbling on about how they were going to play online games and eat candy for the rest of the night; when she could no longer hear them, Huntsgirl laid down her Staff and sprang off the building, darting into the alley. Her blue eyes scanned the shadows for that one bit of movement she needed.
“Dumb and dumber gone?” The voice sounded behind her softly; feeling a smile tugging on her lips she turned. “Yeah,” she said. “They’re gone.” She tucked her mask into her pouch. “You coming out or what?”
In the shadows, Jasmine’s eyes flickered with longing; but she shook her head, stepping back. “I can’t,” she murmured, nodding up at the moon and the silvery beams it cast. “The moonlight changes me, remember?”
Jasmine’s dark eyes were anguished as they met Huntsgirl’s before she sank deeper into the shadows, willing to stay in the darkness instead of stepping into the light and becoming a monster, no matter how much she longed to join the other girl. “I don’t want to hurt you,” she murmured, looking away.
Huntsgirl’s chest ached fiercely; a small, sad smile flitted across her face before she stepped to the other girl; Jasmine started, looking at her in surprise.
“Okay. If you can’t come into the light, I’ll just come into the darkness.”
Jasmine’s eyes widened, and she began to shake her head; but she was stilled when Huntsgirl’s hand gently rested on her cheek. For a moment they gazed at each other until, finally, the blue-eyed girl leaned forward and brushed her lips lightly against Jasmine’s.
It was wrong, she knew. Wrong on so many levels. But it felt so right.
She pulled away, smiling slightly as Jasmine slowly opened her eyes. “Rose,” the other girl murmured. “You can’t.” But her eyes said differently.
“I can, Jasmine. And I will.”
Without hesitation, Huntsgirl stepped out of the light of the moon into the darkness of the shadows.
And as Jasmine pulled her close, she knew she’d never regret it.
The End
Jasmine/Rose is one of my OTPs. XD
