Chapter 18: Danger in the Shadows - Part 1
Sam opened his eyes and looked around. He couldn’t tell where he was. He couldn’t even describe where he was. It was strange. He felt like there was no up or down. He could have been standing on nothing, or falling for all he knew.
But something about this place felt right, like this was home. He called out experimentally and listened as his voice died away slowly in it’s own echoes. He looked sharply around. Something was there. He couldn’t see it, but he could feel it. It was there…somewhere.
But he wasn’t worried. This place was all that mattered, he could feel no darkness, even in his own soul.
He was happy, he was calm.
He was in mortal danger.
The van, when it reappeared, was miles away from the city. The shade and huntsclan had been left in the middle of the city’s rush hour. Sam had now passed out from sheer exhaustion and was being checked over by Laoshi and Fu.
Jake had offered to drive back home, and nobody had refused. Rose was leaning through the dividing curtain, with her hand placed gently on Jake leg. He was worried about his parents and Haley, and was secretly annoyed that Sam had had to move them so far away. His mood changed slightly when he felt Rose kiss him gently on his cheek. He smiled and gently kissed her back. Right now he just wanted to hold her tight and never let go, but that would have to wait. For the time being at least.
Trixie was watching Spud as he hacked the Huntsclan database. He had overheard Sam incoherently mumbling about something called The Spirit Plain, and was trying to find any information on it. He wasn’t having much luck, and eventually turned back to Laoshi and reported,
“Sorry dude, the Huntsclan know nothing and if they do, it’s not on here!”
Jake tuned in and asked,
“What about that british Huntsclan Sam talked about? Can you find them?”
Spud turned back down to the screen and, sure enough, found a link to the british Huntsclan. A few minutes later he frowned. Trixie watched, then asked,
“Yo, what’s with you? What’s wrong?”
Spud didn’t take his eyes away from the screen as masses of code started to scroll up the screen, but replied,
“There must be something here they don’t want me to see, they have voice identification and fingerprint analysis locks that I can only access at the source. But….I have got into their records, and it shows that….”
He stopped and looked back at the figures in the back.
“What?” asked Jake.
“…and they are here in New York, they arrived an hour ago. I’ve also got their target list. They are after the Dark Dragon, Sam…..and you!”
To be continued…
