What started out as protests against a sharp increase in fuel prices has turned into a pro-democracy movement in Myanmar (formerly Burma). Yesterday, Buddhist monks led almost 100,000 pro-democracy protesters through the streets of the capital, Yangon.
The last major democracy movement against the military junta was in 1988. That movement failed after the new military government opened fire on protesters, and imposed martial law. Thousands were killed.
With that in mind, countries around the world are warning the military government not to take violent action against the protesters. Even neighbour China is quietly pressuring Myanmar not to take any serious actions.
There is concern among other countries and human rights groups that the government in Myanmar may violently break up the protests as they did in 1988. The image of soldiers opening fire on unarmed, innocent Buddhist monks doesn't exactly sit well with most people.
What do you think?
