This just came out about a half an hour ago. North Korea, which has been under a Cease Fire treaty with South Korea since 1953, fired dozens of rounds of artillery shells at a South Korean island. The result was devastating. More than 50 houses were set on fire and the South Korean military was prompted to retaliate. Economically speaking, the stock markets in Asia plummeted dramatically. Just a week ago, North Korea completed a facility that would enhance its missile range capacity. And only a few months ago, North Korea allegedly fired on a South Korean submarine. Is this recent attack just a part of the strings of hostilities towards South Korea lately, or is this the beginning of a prolonged conflict?

South Korea has tried for the past 50 years to get better relation ships with the north however every time North Korea has shot them down. doesn't surprise me that the North is starting to initiate war. in America if something like this happens we blow the hole opposing country to peaces. however south Korea realizes its got a decent dent in the worlds economy thus its really hesitant to go to war.
my opinion though, its only a matter of time before a bloody as all hell war breaks out in that stupid peninsula again...

For some reason...I am not surprised. That is all you see today is fighting here and fighting there..The world itself is going to pieces and soon war will break out over everyone.

I do agree with you too Clone. However this time it's not Cold War anymore so NK might end up crushed between two superforces, with Russia and CHian on one side and USA + Eu on the other side along with Japan and some other countries. In poor words : NK would have his ass f-ckin' beaten up hard XD
However I hope that a diplomatic solution will be found before that. There's enough mess in the world already. Adding more isn't exactly the right thing to do.

Yes. If North Korea ever attacks South Korea, there will one different factor from the Korean War. China will likely refuse to back North Korea. As DPRK's "big brother", China is crucial into keeping North Korea from engaging in a full fledged war. Fortunately, they are increasingly tied to the United States for economic reasons, and are at least trying to keep DPRK under watch.
There is basically no way to solve this problem. If the ROK and allies attack DPRK, they risk getting China involved. With it's 2.25 million men army, South Korea might actually disappear. Keeping the status quo with good relations is the key to keeping war from breaking out.

the United states would of won the Korean war if it weren't for China steeping in. we had them backed up in to China and had full control of North Korea... thankfully China's now pretty darn attached to the united states so i do believe that problem wont persist like Italians been pointing out.
the only real thing we have to be worried about is if NK gets nuclear weapons...

That is really the only problem. North Korea currently has missile capability to send small atomic bombs as far as Los Angeles.
Anyway, if DPRK ever launches a missile at the US, the US will devastate North Korea with its own nuclear arsenal; however, it is probable that Russia or China might perceive this as a nuclear attack on their own countries, and start World War 3. Nobody wants THAT to happen.

Nah I doubt that in case of a nuclear war on NK soil China or Russia would perceive it as a direct attack on their countries. Like I said these two countries along with Japan and someo thers, are hte closes to NK and in fact, the ones who are the closest to the danger zone. I'm pretty sure that they'd prefer seeing uSA nuking hte hell up NK instead of seeing NK sending Nuclear bombs on them.

You are absolutely correct. China and Russia will not randomly bomb the US just because it launches it's missiles; however, according to Cold War theory, since a launch will consist of hundreds, maybe thousands of missiles at a time... the other side can never know which is directed at who.

Just think back to the old days when people would fight over a tree log back in the day to build a cabin...
If its not people hating others its murder. If its not that is beating or stabbings. The world is just going all to pieces and such.Next people will say that the USA is weak for not helping or that.Hey USA has our/their own problems to deal with and can't help everyone else.I am not trying to be mean or that, but say when there is a hurricane here,do other countries help? No. But when others do US has to help at the drop of the dime or look 'weak' to others.
PS: Speaking of which,I wanted you guys to know I am glad I came here and joined this forum, for the chance to meet you people and become friends. And if something ever happens to me..I want you guys to know you feel like real family and I will always enjoy the friendship I had with you guys.

Some people say Kim Jong Il is the living tyrant of today, although I'm not sure if he is like a "sleeping" Adolf Hitler. And even still he quietly built a nuclear power plant only to be compromised by a US journalist.
If he is gone, will NK finally merge with the South?

If Kim Jong Il is suddenly gone, there could be two possibilities. One is that North Korea will merge, the other is that North Korea will continue its path of aggression. And in terms of Adolf Hitler, I don't think Kim Jong Il is planning on any mass suicides. I don't think he is racist, at least...

Well as far as I know Kim-Il Sun ( Kim Jong Il's son ) is just a copy of his father. But the citizens could exploit that "No one to rule the country " momentto just crush everyone who tyrannized them for decades, who knows ??

I know Kim is not as tyrannical as Hitler, except who is the main tyrant who ever live? Well, there's him and as well as Osama. But what we know so far is that he is very Soviet-like to keep communism alive. Even today when I read the newspaper, when he saw USS George Washington is coming, he is provoked that the South is planning to wage a war, but honestly, if North is the one who starts everything, they will be punished. The South don't declare war for no good reason, if the North wants to start a fight, we'll give you a fight.
And as for merging, I prefer the North to become the same as the South. If they continue to be aggressive, it will be futile just like how bad guys used to face, like the Nazis, Soviets & Africa's West Side Boys. They were enemies but then they're finally gone, even if they are still alive, they'll go underground.
But we got one big problem, China is the North's ally, I can't believe even Beijing is feeling the pressure and won't hesitate to help the North.

In fact, even though China is North Korea's ally, they have their own interests in keeping a stable Korean peninsula. They are the ones that are "pressing" North Korea to maintain the peace.
