Seeing as how my old thread of my story was -coughs-rudely-coughs- deleted, I'll start over with my "remake" of my story. There are new details, new story line, and I tried to make the characters more interesting. Enjoy and tell me if I should continue!A prologue will be posted soon when I finish it but it isn't necessary until later in the story. Enjoy!
Chapter One: The Pain of Dragons
It was an ordinary day in the small town of Cary, New York. The sun shone down and a few clouds floated by in the wind. Cary was just a small, country like town where every thing was guaranteed to be peaceful. The town had an extraordinarily low crime rate and no one has been taken to the jail in Cary for a few years. All of the citizens were very polite and most knew each other. It’s in this town, a fifteen years-old boy, Henry Sofe, sat down on his porch looking at his friend Alexis walking up the dirt pathway.
Henry gave a smile and a wave. Alexis wove back and walked up the driveway to Henry’s house. When she arrived she gave him a smile.
“Hello Henry,” Alexis said.
At first thought, this would seem like an ordinary day with two friends talking. But, there was a catch to this seemingly innocent friendship. Alexis was not a normal person but a dragon. Whenever people saw them together, they often wondered why two different species were hanging out together but there was a second strange aspect to the two. People would have found it unusual that the two of them were in love, despite Henry being just a human. Having a love between two different species was controversial so only other dragons knew about it because they were more accepting than humans were.
Alexis was a light pink dragon with soft, caring black eyes. Because of evolution over the years, she stood on two feet, just like a human. She was about six and a half feet tall when she stood erect. Her wingspan was good too, having a span of about five feet when her wings were fully stretched out. She had short, blonde hair that reached to her shoulders which she thought looked awful mixed with her pink color. Henry however, found her extremely beautiful.
“Nice to see you again Alexis,” Henry said, standing up.
Henry was of course a fifteen years-old boy. He had short brown hair which Alexis seemed to envy. His eyes were of amazement to Alexis as well. They were a light green color and they always seemed to show compassion for others in them. He stood at about five a half feet which Alexis would always laugh at whenever he stood up next to her. His skin was one of white with a very small tan. He was also considered one of the few skinny boys around the town of Cary. People always laughed as well at his attire. He usually wore blue jean shorts and a grayish shirt but he wore other clothes sometimes. Tied around his waist was usually a black jacket.
“It’s been a while,” Henry said to her.
Alexis gave a small laugh at this statement and said, “Is one day too long for you?” as she bent down and the two of them shared a kiss.
Henry and Alexis were together just the other night. They were out with their friends just having fun and talking.
“It’s always too long whenever you are out of my sight,” Henry said to her after they broke the kiss.
Alexis gave a smile at this. She never had to be reminded of how much Henry loved her and she knew Henry felt the same way. She looked around the yard and noticed it was quiet. This was strange to her considering that Henry’s mother was always running about and yelling about something being wrong all the time.
“Where is your mom?” Alexis asked out of curiosity though she didn’t really care about where she was.
Henry lived alone with his mother, Maria. According to her, his father died shortly after she was pregnant. She tried to tell Henry about what his dad was like but it was always hard for him to picture his father. She would say that he was a handsome man but had evil roots to him. Of course, the description kept throwing Henry off because whenever he thought of a handsome man, he thought of a man that did good deeds. But then if he tried to think of a man with a touch of evil, he thought of a horrible and vile looking man. In the end, he stopped trying to envision his father and just listened to the stories that Maria would occasionally tell of him.
“Eh, she is probably out shopping today. I really don’t keep up with her,” Henry told Alexis.
Alexis gave a small nod of understanding and asked, “So, how was our little secret meeting last night?”
“We meet in secret every night with the group and my answer is always the same,” Henry said with a playful roll of his eyes.
Alexis and Henry hung out in private at nights with other dragons. Henry loved being around them and the dragons had taken a liking to Henry. He was one of the very few, if not the only, people that actually considered dragons as living things with feelings. Because of this, the dragons considered Henry a friend and didn’t mind having a human hanging around with them.
“I know your answer is always the same but I still can’t help but ask. You also don’t have to roll your eyes every time I say something. People will think that you are crazy.” Alexis said back, being playful as well before they kissed again.
Henry and Alexis finally broke away and Henry invited Alexis inside. She thought about it and finally decided that since Maria wasn’t home, she would accept the invitation. They went into the small house and closed the door behind them. Henry didn’t think much of the house and didn’t consider it anything special that should be praised. To him, it was just a place for him to live whenever he wasn’t outside with others. It contained just a living room, kitchen, a bathroom, and two bedrooms. Maria had always wished they could have a bigger house just for more room but that wish has yet to come true and Maria wasn’t making any real noticeable progress towards getting a bigger house. All that she had to pay for that house were her dreams and thoughts of owning it one day.
“Planning on doing anything today?” Alexis asked of
Henry as they headed to his room.
“Maybe walk the streets and relax,” was all that Henry said as they entered the room, Alexis ducking her head so that she didn’t bash it against the door top on the way in.
Dragon posters hung all over his brown walls along
with a few pictures of Alexis and himself together. On his desk sat a few books, a small lamp, and a picture of Alexis and him. The top of his dresser was bare except for some dragon pictures. His bed was brownish as well. His sheets were a very light brown and Alexis laughed at his room whenever she saw it. And naturally, as soon as they stepped into the room, she laughed.
“Still laughing at my room?” Henry asked her and Alexis smiled.
“I can’t help it. You have a lot of brown in the room. Kind of overkill, don’t you think? We should change your room a bit and then there are all the pictures of me and other dragons,” she said.
“We can get rid of some of the brown later. And as for all the pictures of dragons...well, you know I admire dragons,” Henry said.
Alexis just stared at him and Henry smiled. Henry took this chance to be a bit of a romantic and then stared into Alexis’ eyes.
“And I admire you,” Henry said.
“You better admire me,” Alexis said teasingly.
“Don’t worry, I do,” Henry said and they kissed once more.
“God, can’t you just chill on all of this making out crap?
I had to watch it coming all of the way up the road and I don’t want to watch it now so stop making out and come outside!” a voice yelled from Henry’s only window in his room.
They turned and saw Richard standing outside. He was a little bit younger than Henry but unlike Henry, he didn’t respect dragons. Richard was shorter than Henry with brown hair and a gothic look. He usually hung out with the gothic people around time but it was rare to see them out during the daytime or with other people. Richard however found Henry to be cool so he usually hung out with him whenever his other friends weren’t around. Henry and Alexis just sighed and they went outside. Of course, the first comment Richard said didn’t surprise them.
“I don’t see why you are making out with a dragon. You should be with a higher power, an actual human,” Richard said.
Naturally, this statement made both Henry and Alexis angry. Dragons could be sensitive when it came to insults and when someone insulted dragons in front of Henry, a fight could usually be expected. Before Alexis could say a word, Henry balled up his fists and started to get angry at Richard.
“How dare you?!” Henry snapped.
The statement about humans being a higher power angered him more than the statement about him being told who he should love. Alexis herself was angry at the same statement but on a bit more of a personal level than Henry.
“Humans a higher power?! Ha! Don’t make me laugh. Only Henry is worthy of being a higher power. The rest of you humans aren’t higher than dragons. You’re lucky if you can even be higher than rats on this so-called ‘chain of power’,” Alexis said.
“So you hate humans?” Richard asked sockily, acting like he just won a huge argument.
“No, I am just saying that humans are not a higher power than humans. I still respect humans though. That’s a lot more respect than what us dragons receive from your kind,” Alexis said.
Tired of the argument and just wanting to be away from this argument and his dragon hating friend, Henry said, “ Richard, honestly...just leave us alone now.”
He then walked down the street, leaving Richard and Alexis behind. Alexis growled at Richard, baring her fangs to let him know not to follow him or cause anymore trouble, and flew off behind Henry.
Henry walked to the market with anger filling his whole body. He was so mad that someone could dare call humans a higher power than dragons. He then looked around and saw dragons serving humans as if they were nothing more than maids and butlers. This really made Henry mad. Dragons were not respected by humans. They were only treated like dirt.
‘How can they do this?!’ Henry thought angrily, hating everything.
He looked over to see a person walking down the
street with a dragon behind him carrying many bags that appeared to be greatly heavy. He recognized the dragon as Kisak. Kisak was a black dragon mixed with some red. He too had black eyes but his hair was brown like Henry’s. Unlike Alexis’ however, it was short and barely went past his ears.
“Kisak!” Henry said to him without thinking about it and walked over to his dragon friend.
“Kisak!” the man with him said loudly.
“Yes?” Kisak asked politely.
“Yes what?!” the man barked.
“Yes master,” Kisak said, a hint of bitterness tainting his voice.
“Do you know this boy?!” the man asked, anger in his own voice.
“I do. I asked him for help one time,” Henry said, stepping into the conversation, lying to get Kisak out of trouble.
“Oh is that all? Well, at least I know he is not just a worthless thing like he usually seems like,” the man said with a sneer and walked on.
Henry narrowed his eyes in anger at the man while Kisak stopped so Henry could approach him and gave a low draconic growl towards his master.
“I’m sorry if I got you in trouble,” Henry said and turned his attention to Kisak.
“I shouldn’t really be in too much trouble but still...” Kisak started, looking at his master walking ahead of him.
“I know. You don’t deserve to be insulted. Dragons are higher than humans and you know that,” Henry said, reversing the statement that Richard had said to Alexis and Henry earlier.
Kisak gave a small smile and said, “Yeah. I don’t know how you do it but you always make me feel better.”
“Anything I can do to help?” Henry offered, wanting to repay his friend for causing him a small bit of trouble.
“Just come and be with the group tonight,” Kisak said with a smile.
“Kisak!” the man’s voice rang out from down the street after noticing his dragon had not been following him for the past minute.
Kisak rolled his eyes and for some reason, Henry found it funny to see a dragon rolling his eyes. Out of courtesy though, he held back his laughter so not to offend his friend.
“I better get going,” Kisak said casually and received a nod from .
“Okay, talk to you later Kisak,” Henry said with a smile and a wave.
Kisak went back with the man and Henry continued to walk down the streets. He was passing by the grocery store when he saw his mother coming out with both arms full of groceries. Henry ran to help her and caught a bag which almost hit the ground.
“Always in the right place at the right time,” Maria said.
Henry smiled and gave the bag back to his mom. “Well, I was just passing by here for something to do so I guess you got lucky.”
“Well, I’ve been needing a bout of good luck. I’ve been having nothing but bad luck ever since your dad left,” Maria said.
Henry just sighed and shook his head. He didn’t really like hearing about his father because every time he was brought up, only more questions about the man came to his mind. Maria sensed his uncomfortableness and gave him a small pat on the shoulder.
“It’ll be all right Henry. I’m going to bring these home now. Do you mind following me and helping me out with them?” Maria asked.
Henry snapped out of his thoughts about his father and mindlessly said, “Huh? Oh, yeah, I’ll be there.”
Maria gave a small nod and walked towards her house, leaving Henry alone standing on the spot with thoughts of his father still lingering in his mind. Before he could move to follow his mother, he saw the man that Kisak was with earlier strutting up to him as if he was the most important man in the world. Sensing nothing but trouble, Henry was immediately on guard and kept his eye on the man’s every movement. When the man stopped in front of Henry, he looked him up and down before giving him a piercing glare that didn’t scare Henry.
“Look, I don’t know what you want with my dragon but he is mine. I own him,” the man said with a sense of supreme authority.
The anger that Henry had suppressed from earlier started to burn in full flames again. He returned the man’s glare and boldly said, “No one can own a dragon, if anything dragons should own humans.”
“Excuse me?” the man asked in surprise, not believing
what he was hearing from Henry.
“You heard me old man! You need to stop treating Kisak like a peace of crap and let him free! You don’t own him or any other dragon in the world!” Henry yelled at him, no longer able to control the anger that was fueling his words.
“You can’t tell me what to do with my dragon and if I were you, I would watch my temper and attitude towards my elders,” the man said angrily.
“Let him go,” Henry said as if he didn’t hear the man. “You have no right to insult dragons in any way. Owning them is just one of the many dirty forms that humans use to insult them.”
A punch then hit Henry square in the face and he fell to the ground. He got up and tried to punch at the man but missed and was kicked in the back, causing him to fall to the ground again in pain. Henry turned to look at the man who was about to bring his foot down on him again.
“Leave him alone!” a voice rang out and Henry looked for the source of the easily recognizable voice to see Alexis flying over to them with a look of pure loathing on her face.
“Another pathetic dragon?” the man asked in exasperation as if they were rodents taking over.
Alexis gave a loud growl and swiped at the man with
her claws. The man looked down to see his shirt was ripped and had little trickles of blood staining his shirt. He looked up at Alexis and Henry and made a move towards them before Alexis landed in front of Henry and stared down at the human.
“You’ll pay,” the man vowed and ran.
“You okay?” Alexis asked with concern, helping Henry up off the ground.
“Yeah, I’m fine. Thanks Alexis, you saved me from that evil man,” Henry said with bitterness towards his attacker.
“What happened?” Alexis asked, unaware of what caused the man to attack Henry in the first place. Henry explained the entire situation to Alexis and she gave a sigh. “I swear, the people in this world. They can be so cruel, inconsiderate, and just plain...ugh! I can’t even speak properly thinking about the evil they do,” she growled and glared back at a couple passing by them who were giving Alexis an angry look.
“I am not included in that category am I?” Henry asked, turning Alexis towards him to distract her from the fit of anger she was on the verge of having.
“Never,” Alexis said truthfully and, in front of all the humans and their ‘servant’ dragons, they kissed happily, allowing the horrible events of that morning be forgotten if only for a few moments.
