Epilogue
“They’re good.”
C.J.’s voice was soft, her chocolate brown eyes trained on the fight below her. Rose glanced briefly at her sister before looking down again, frowning worriedly. Below them a fight was taking place, between Jake and 88 and 89. The target: an ancient scroll that would reveal the whereabouts of another Aztec skull.
The two had obviously improved from the level they had been at when Rose had been a member. A roar of rage escaped Jake as one’s Staff slashed his side, and he retaliated with a blasting fire ball. Rose swallowed hard. “C.J.,” she pleaded. “Easy, baby sister.” The older girl’s voice was calm. “Learn to wait. Remember what Tory always used to say.”
Rose nodded, but her willpower was being badly shaken as she watched the battle below her. 88 and 89 were much more skilled then they had been before, and the fact that she watching the fight from the sidelines instead of assisting Jake was agony. But it was something C.J. had been adamant about. “C.J.,” she whispered, “I forgot what Tory always used to say.” “That’s because she only said it once.” “What was it?”
For a long moment C.J. said nothing, gazing at the battle below with narrowed eyes. A soft whimper escaped Rose as Jake was knocked brutally to the ground but she stayed by C.J.’s side, sensing her sister knew what she was doing. She shifted silently before beginning to rise, beckoning with her hand for Rose to do the same.
“Now,” she said softly. “But what did Tory—“ “I’ll tell you later, baby sister. Now we have to save your boyfriend.”

The Staff whistled through the air. If it hit its intended target, Jake would never fly again.
“No!”
A lithe form slammed hard into 88, knocking him off balance and away from the fallen dragon. 89 whirled, ready to help his companion, but before he could do anything an arm snaked around his neck and jerked back hard, causing him to cry out and release his own Staff. “Move your tail, Jake!” C.J. shouted.
Jake had been frozen with shock at the sight, but scrambled to his feet now as Rose backed away from 88 and C.J. released 89, racing to her sister’s side. “You know what Tory said?” “What?” “Wait for the moment—then give ‘em hell!”
The sisters sprang together, meeting 88 and 89 halfway and fighting for all their worth, never leaving the other alone. Jake desperately twirled the lock of the safe with his hand, pulling the door open just as a loud thud and the sound of an energy blast filled his ears.
He turned, scroll in hand, to find 88 and 89 sprawled in a heap on the ground. One Staff lay beside them, the blade still smoking. The other had been broken in the battle.
C.J. and Rose had both vanished.

Still panting from the battle, Rose watched Jake look around briefly before flaring his wings and flying away. The disappearances didn’t bother him; he still saw Rose in school on regular basis, and C.J. often let him come over. Drained from the short but demanding battle, Rose leaned against C.J., head resting against her sister’s shoulder as she caught her breath.
The night sky was clear and speckled with stars, the full moon glowing brightly in the sky. Below the streets bustled with life and the buildings were lit up all around them.
“Hey, C.J.” “Yeah?” C.J. shifted her head so she was looking at Rose. “You think Tory would be proud of us?”
For a moment C.J. was silent, mulling the question over. The stars flashed brilliantly overhead and a warm breeze swirled by the sisters, tugging at their braided hair before continuing on its way. C.J. gazed at another building bathed in moonlight.
For just an instant, she could have sworn she saw a woman standing on the building’s roof edge, gazing down on them, her blue eyes sparkling and her body faded and pale against the night sky. But she blinked, and the woman was gone.
She smiled.
“Yeah,” she said. “I think she’d be real proud of us.”
The End
Uh.... yeah.... that's it. The end. No more story. No sequel planned.
