When There Was Me and You
The night air was cool and crisp, but Huntsgirl gave no thought to it as she raced across the tops of buildings, running to keep stride with the American Dragon’s easy flight. Her body had exhausted itself hours into the pursuit, and now only rage and grief kept her from turning back.
It’s funny when you find yourself
Looking from the outside
I’m standing here but all I want
Is to be over there
She had seen him by pure accident, had looked up while patrolling with the Huntsboys and spotted him. Her mind had cleared of everything in an instant, and she had ordered the two to return without her; this was something she had to do herself. They had been confused, but since she was higher rank then them, they had obeyed.
And damn it all, her heart had still done a quick flip flop when she saw him.
Why did I let myself believe
Miracles could happen
‘Cause now I have to pretend
That I don’t really care
She saw him flare his wings, circle, and land, shaking himself lightly as his feet touched the ground. She ducked into the shadows, more out of instinct then not wanting to be seen. Just seeing him now, and realizing that all along he had been the enemy, only stoked her fury.
Just seeing him now made her heart pound much faster then before.
I thought you were my fairy tale
A dream when I’m not sleeping
A wish upon a star that’s coming true
But everybody else could tell
That I confused my feelings with the truth
When there was me and you
To hell with hiding. Huntsgirl hadn’t come this far just to cower in the shadows. She had come to even the odds a little, soothe the sharp ache in her chest. Damn it all to hell!
She slid noiselessly from the shadows, but somehow he sensed her presence, and turned. His eyes widened when he saw her. “Rose?”
Whatever he planned to say after that was interrupted when her fisted hand connected solidly with his jaw. Off balance and seeing stars, he stumbled back and landed hard on the cement.
“Get up, you miserable coward, so I can hit you again.”
I swore I knew the melody
That I heard you singing
And when you smiled you made me feel
Like I could sing along
She loomed over him, righteous fury in her eyes. Jake sat where he was a moment, rubbing a hand over his jaw. He didn’t mind the blow so much. Under the circumstances, he knew he’d had it coming. But he didn’t like being called a coward. However, it was best to let Huntsgirl get this out of her system. “You’re upset.”
“Upset?” The word hissed between her teeth. “I’ll show you upset.” Because he obviously wasn’t going to get up, she dived on him.
But then you went and changed the words
Now my heart is empty
I’m only left with used-to-be’s
And once upon a song
She knocked the wind out of him with another punch as he grappled for her hands. “Damn it, Rose, stop. I don’t want to hurt you.”
“Hurt me?” Blind with anger, she struck out as he struggled to roll on top of her. This time her knee slipped past his defense and landed dead on. As the air whistled out of his lungs, he collapsed on top of her.
“Get off me, you creep.”
He couldn’t have moved if his life depended on it. The pain, deserved or not, was like a silvery shimmer from crotch to brain. His only defense was his weight as he sprawled breathlessly over her.
“Rose…” He dragged in air, and saw a new constellation. “Your match,” he conceded.
Now I know you’re not a fairy tale
And dreams were meant for sleeping
And wishes on a star just don’t come true
‘Cause now even I can tell
That I confused my feelings with the truth
Because I liked the view
When there was me and you
The fight had drained out of Huntsgirl. She didn’t want Jake to know how weak and helpless she felt. “Get off me,” she whispered, praying her voice wouldn’t tremble.
“As soon as I’m sure I’m still intact. If you let me get my wind back, we can go another round.” Jake managed to lift his head.
She was crying. Large, silent tears welled in her eyes and rolled down her cheeks. More stunned by them then by the blow, he shook his head. “Don’t.” He brushed the tears away, but more fell to replace them. “Damn it, Rose, stop it.”
“Let go of me.”
He rolled aside, determined to leave her alone so she could compose herself, and instead found himself gathering her close, dragging her into his lap, pulling off her mask to stroke her hair.
I can’t believe that I could be so blind
It’s like you were floating
While I was falling
And I didn’t mind
Her body went rigid. “Jake. Don’t.” Anger and humiliation battled inside her. “I don’t want you to touch me.”
“I know. I have to.”
“You lied to me.”
“Yeah. We lied to each other.”
“You used me.”
“No.” His arms tightened. “No. You know better then that.”
“I don’t know you at all.” Huntsgirl tried to arch away, but Jake only cradled her closer. Abruptly she threw her arms around him, burying her face against his throat, her tears pouring out in hard, racking sobs, no longer silent as she clung to him.
“I hate you,” she sobbed. “I’ll hate you as long as I live.”
They both knew she didn’t believe what she said.
Because I liked the view
I thought you felt it to
When there was me and you
The End
This is what happens when you mix angsty Jake/Rose and an angsty song from High School Musical...
This takes place after The Hunted, but could probably also take place after Half Baked, since according to spoilers Jake turns away from Rose for his duty.
.... DON'T HURT ME! (Runs and hides)
TTW: Uh... yeah... this is pretty much discontinued/on hiatus. Leaning torwards discontinued, though.
