Chapter 10: Heart’s Beacon
“Wait a sec.”
IronHand and Lao Shi paused, looking at Jake. “What is it, J?” “Young dragon? You sense something?”
Jake angled his head to one side, his ears swiveling forward and back. He frowned. “I don’t know how to explain it,” he muttered. “Something’s just tellin’ me we shouldn’t go to the cemetery just yet.” “Say WHAT?!” “I know it sounds crazy!” The young dragon shook his head irritably. “But my heart’s sayin’ not to go to the cemetery yet.” “Where is it guiding you, young one?” “I… I don’t know, G.” Jake frowned. “Follow it.”
The young dragon turned to his mentor. “You’re willing to trust me?” “You’re heart has sensed the beacon of another.” Lao Shi closed his eyes briefly. “Follow it, and it will lead you to the one who calls.”

It was beginning to rain again, the rain seeming black and silver against the blood-red sky. Huntsgirl ducked into an alley and huddled in the shadows, her back against the brick wall, breathing hard.
She didn’t know how fast she had been running, or how far she had gone. All she knew for certain was that her uncle was dead; had died protecting her. She bowed her head and cried softly, sobs that were barely audible but shook her slim body.
At that moment, she did not feel like Huntsgirl. She felt like a little girl, lost and scared, torn from everything she had known and loved, torn from the embrace of an uncle, of a boy that she had known so well. Slowly, she sank to the ground, pulling her knees up to her chest, and buried her face in her hands, crying.
“Jake…”
The rain fell, drenching her, seeming colder and more wet then usual. Up above, the stars seemed cold and distant, as if the world was on its own now, facing Darkfire by itself. At that moment Huntsgirl wanted to curl up in a ball, but she resisted the urge, forcing her legs beneath her again, though they quickly gave out beneath her.
“Jake… I need you…”
Unknown to her, her heart cried out, and somewhere in the darkness, another answered.

Jake blinked rain out of his eyes. He angled his head to one side, trying to scan the city, to no avail. The sky and the rain blinded him, and he hovered for a moment, unsure. IronHand and Lao Shi watched him silently. “Jake?” “Hush, Kellen. Don’t distract him.”
Jake closed his eyes, listening to the steady beat of his heart. Gramps told me to follow my heart, he thought. He listened.
As the silence and rain washed over him, he became aware of another heartbeat. It was impossible, there was no way that even he, a dragon, could hear another person’s heartbeat, but he did. He lifted his head, parting his jaws slightly, drinking in the air. The heartbeat rang in his ears, as if pleading him to answer.
Come on… come on! Where are you?
Jake growled softly. I know you’re somewhere…
Slowly swinging his head, Jake spied an alley in the corner; it was small, barely noticeable, dark and shadowed.
If someone was hiding…
Flaring his wings, Jake dove to the alley. Lao Shi and IronHand waited; this was something the young dragon had to do on his own.
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
For the second time, Huntsgirl forced herself to stand. This time her legs supported her, and she swiped at her cheeks. This was no time for crying. She had to find Jake.
Which is just as easy as finding a needle in a haystack…
She pulled off her glove and examined her hand.
Damn. The mark was still there, not as bright as before, but still making her body ache and making her feel woozy. She sighed, pulling the glove back on. There was nothing she could do about the mark, for now. She would have to put up with it until this thing ended.
If this thing ever ends…
A shadow arched over the alley, and Huntsgirl tensed. She stepped back, melting into the shadows.
A flare of wings, and a large red dragon landed in the alley. He angled his head to one side, breathing in deeply. Huntsgirl took a tentative step away from the shadows; hope welled in her chest, held back by caution, but for the first time she felt hope… she knew of only one person that could bring her hope like this. She stepped out of the shadows.
“Jake?”
He stiffened in surprise at her voice—so soft it was barely audible over the steady beat of rain—and his ears swiveled back. Slowly he turned to face her.
“Rose?”
Her eyes widened, and there it was again, that feeling of hope, of warmth and a rush of feelings that she was still to young to understand, and yet she did. She felt tears leaking out of her eyes and down her cheeks for the second (third? She didn’t know) time.
“Oh, Jake…”
He rushed to her, pulling her into his arms, holding her close, rocking her gently, his voice soft and soothing: “It’s gonna be okay, Rose, you’re safe now, you’re gonna be okay…”
And for the first time since this had all started, Huntsgirl truly believed that she would survive.

Chapter 11: Darkfire
“We have to go back?”
Jake winced at the nervousness and pain in Huntsgirl’s voice. Only a few minutes ago she had told them about what had happened: the spell, the creature’s release, and her uncle’s death. Going back to the cemetery must have seemed like a very bad idea to her given her current situation. “Yeah,” he said. Somewhat lamely he added, “I’m sorry.”
“‘Sorry’ won’t bring my uncle back,” Huntsgirl whispered. Jake winced. IronHand frowned.
“I know it hurts, Rose, but we have to go back,” he said softly. “If we don’t, more people are going to die.”
Huntsgirl met IronHand’s gaze, and briefly he wondered if he had said the wrong thing. Then, after a moment that lasted one second and a thousand years, she dipped her head in acceptance.
“I don’t like it… but I don’t want any other people to die.” She raised her head, and her eyes flashed. “Let’s bring this fight to Darkfire himself.”
“That’s my girl,” Jake teased fondly, and Huntsgirl blushed, averting her eyes from his to study the ground.
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Huntsgirl sprang lightly off Jake’s back onto the soft grass. The cemetery was the last place on Earth she wanted to be, but she didn’t want Darkfire to run around, either. Jake straightened to his full height, while Lao Shi and IronHand came over to them. Without a word Huntsgirl set off in the direction that she had left, the other three falling in step with her.
It didn’t take long for her courage to falter. Each step she took grew more uncertain, and she fought the urge to turn and run. She took a deep breath. “It’s okay,” she whispered hoarsely. “That thing won’t get me…” Even so, she stopped, her whole body trembling, feeling limp like a newborn child.
I can’t do this! She thought fearfully. I can’t! Asking me to go back is like asking me to do the Hunt all over again!
She jumped in surprise when someone took her hand; it was Jake. He looked down at her, his dark eyes gentle, and gave her hand a reassuring squeeze. “You can do this,” he said to her, softly so that Lao Shi and IronHand couldn’t hear. “I know you can.”
The faith he had in her filled Huntsgirl’s whole body with warmth from head to foot, and not caring that they had an audience she tugged off her mask and kissed him quickly on the cheek. Quickly she pulled her mask back on, hiding her blush; Jake turned an even deeper shade of red that he was supposed to be. Behind them, Lao Shi had respectively averted his eyes, while IronHand coughed to cover up his laugh of surprise. “Feel better?” he teased.
Jake shot him a glare of promised death over his shoulder, but Huntsgirl just smiled beneath her mask.
“You have no idea…”
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
They emerged from the trees into the clearing. Everything was just the way Huntsgirl remembered, save the cauldron had been over-turned and the Shadow Box…
… The Shadow Box lay on its side, gapping open like a beached fish. It no longer had symbols of light upon it; it was just a regular old black box. Huntsgirl saw her uncle’s body and looked away, shuddering; her grip on Jake’s hand tightened until it was almost painful, but if he minded he said nothing.
“The Shadow Box,” IronHand piqued after a moment. “It doesn’t seem so… shadowy, anymore.”
“It shouldn’t,” Huntsgirl replied, forcing herself to gaze at the clearing. “Darkfire is free, now. He doesn’t need the Shadow Box anymore. It’s just a Box.”
“So… that’s a bad thing, then.”
“But where is he?” Lao Shi studied the clearing. “If he were here, I am certain I would have detected him…”
At that instant pain thundered throughout Huntsgirl’s entire body; she jerked away from Jake with a soft cry, her whole body stiffening as pain assaulted her.
“Lao Shi, move!”
Her shout came too late; out of the darkness a claw lashed out, raking down Lao Shi’s body and smashing into his skull. The older dragon let out a strangled cry; he crumbled to the ground, taken out by an enemy he hadn’t seen.
“Grandpa!”
Jake tried to run to Lao Shi, but Huntsgirl gripped his hand and held him back. “What are you doing? He needs my help!” “You’ll walk right to Darkfire!” “But…” “Jake, just trust me! You go to Lao Shi, you won’t come back! I’ve already lost my uncle! I don’t want to lose you!”
Jake growled but stayed beside Huntsgirl. IronHand crept cautiously to his side.
“Oh, crap…”
Darkfire pushed aside some small trees, revealing himself for the first time. He towered over the three. His eyes were glowing red, the very essence of pain, and his hair fell in a long, tangled light gray mane down his back. His skin was the color of crimson, striped black, his long claws dark gray and already stained with blood. Muscles rippled and bulged beneath crimson skin.
Darkfire was free.
And he was a full fledged demon.

Chapter 12: The First and Final Battle
“I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again… oh, crap!”
Jake didn’t hesitate, gripping Huntsgirl’s shoulder and pulling her onto his back, flaring his wings, and shooting into the sky as a dark-clawed hand raked the spot they had been standing in only seconds ago. Huntsgirl’s eyes widened with shock.
“How fast is that thing?!”
Jake hurled a fire ball at Darkfire. The demon angled his head to one side, almost as if surveying the dragon with amusement, before holding out one hand, fingers extended. The fire ball flew harmlessly into Darkfire’s hand, growing bigger as it whirled there.
“That wasn’t supposed to happen!”
Darkfire hurled the ball back at Jake, bigger. He knew there was no way he could get out of its way, but Huntsgirl’s arms tightened around his neck, and he was willing to try. “Hold on tight! Dragon Airlines is going in for a rough landing!” He folded his wings and dove, Huntsgirl flattening against his body, and the fire ball barely missed them, though now they were right in front of Darkfire’s claws. He grinned—or at least, Jake assumed he did—before raising his hand.
Then his back arched, and he let out a roar of pain, his hand raking empty air. Jake flared his wings and backpedaled as best he could.
IronHand had transformed himself into a sword, and was repeatedly stabbing Darkfire anywhere he could reach. Although this caused Darkfire pain, it was also about as effective as stabbing a giant with a toothpick, and Darkfire’s claws were a blur of gray.
“Kellen!”
IronHand backpedaled furiously and ducked into the safety of the trees. Jake jerked in surprise as Huntsgirl sprang off his back. “Rose! What are you doing?”
She was suspended in mid-air for a minute before landing on Darkfire’s back; the demon was hunched over, trying to find IronHand. It took a few moments for Jake to realize that in her hand she gripped a Hunts-Staff. She raked it down Darkfire’s neck, Staff ablaze, and the demon roared, rearing back. She was thrown off his back and into the air. Jake dove and managed to catch her.
“How many times do I have to save your life?” “How many times do you think I’ll get myself into trouble?”
Jake rolled his eyes as Huntsgirl climbed onto his back. “Where’d you get the Staff?” “Trader’s secret.”
As Darkfire stumbled, Jake dove over to IronHand, landing beside him. The iron man held something in his hand, and when Darkfire’s jaws gaped, he threw it as best he could. It disappeared down Darkfire’s throat. Jake slowly turned to face IronHand as Huntsgirl slid off his back.
“Kellen, please don’t tell me you didn’t throw a grenade down Darkfire’s throat.”
“It wasn’t a grenade,” IronHand assured him, and Jake sighed with relief.
“It was a bomb of my own design.” “What!”
Darkfire’s throat shuddered; he let out another roar of pain, and dark smoke drifted from his mouth. He staggered back, clutching his chest, and grunted. After a moment, he staggered to his feet.
“Dang, he just doesn’t quit, does he?”
Pain was Huntsgirl’s warning. “Uh, guys…”
They didn’t need to be told twice. IronHand moved farther back into the trees, and Huntsgirl ducked into the shadows. Jake began to move.
Suddenly, a red hand swooped down and grabbed Jake, lifting him high into the air. “Hey, hey!”
Jake squirmed in Darkfire’s grasp, but he could not break free, and he let out a roar of pain as Darkfire squeezed him. The demon grinned evilly, squeezing harder, making Jake roar again and making him double over. IronHand’s eyes widened with horror, and a stifled cry escaped Huntsgirl’s throat. “Jake!”
If they didn’t do something, Jake would be crushed.
If they didn’t do something, Darkfire would win, and they would not only lose a friend, but the whole world.
