Yet another one-shot by me ;D
Not as good as DDC but I like it.
Chasing Snowflakes
Huntsman and Huntsgirl stood together in the park, hunting for unicorns. There had been no luck so far, and Huntsman was finally ready to admit defeat. He turned and called to Thorn, who bounded to his side immediately. “Let’s go home,” he told her. “There’s nothing here.” Disappointment shone in Thorn’s eyes—she enjoyed the hunt just as much as her uncle, but she shrugged. “If you say so,” she replied.
Huntsman was about to transport them away when he noticed scraps of white drifting down from the sky. Snow! Huntsman thought, glancing up at a night sky where clouds were darker then ever. No wonder he and Thorn couldn’t find anything. Huntsman knew that snowfall would bring trouble for the Huntsclan. Any magical creatures might die in the cold, or stay huddled up in their homes where his hunters could not follow
Hearing a surprised squeak from Thorn, he turned around. A snowflake had landed on her outstretched palm and was slowly melting. The apprentice pulled off her mask and licked it off, her blue eyes round with wonder.
“What is it, Huntsmaster?” she asked. “It’s cold!”
Huntsman remembered then that, until now, his niece had lived in Florida, where there was no snow. This would be her first. He let out a chuckle of amusement. “It’s snow,” he replied. “It comes in the winter. If it goes on like this, the flakes will cover all the ground and the trees.”
“Really? But they’re so tiny!”
“There will be lots of them, though.”
Thorn was watching the falling flakes with wide eyes. Huntsman saw her reach out one hand tentatively to dab at one of them. A heartbeat later she was leaping and whirling with high-pitched cries of excitement, as if she were trying to catch every single flake before it reached the ground.
Huntsman felt a rush of affection for his niece.
It was amazing, really, how a young dragon slayer could still chase snowflakes just for the joy of it.
The End
