I Need You
Ah, the day was off to a lovely start.
That was Lao Shi’s current thought as he gazed at the door to his electronics shop; which had been slammed, rather loudly, by his young grandson Jake only five minutes beforehand. He scowled at the door and, when the door failed to cower since it wasn’t alive, rested his forehead against his countertop for a moment.
Lao Shi figured he had the privilege to a few minutes of sulking. He usually made it a habit to avoid, but what the hell. He was in a bad mood.
Don’t be so scared, we will not lead you on like you’ve been doing for weeks
So you’re selfish, and I’m sorry
When I’m gone you’ll be going nowhere fast
Nowhere fast, nowhere fast
Who had said that wisdom came with age? Lao Shi laughed tiredly. Whoever it was, he or she had obviously never met Jake. He sighed, lifting his head again to gaze at the closed door.
He contemplated going after his young, fiery student and grandson, but decided against it. When he was like this, it was best to leave Jake by himself for awhile so he could calm down.
Would you believe me if I said I didn’t need you
‘Cause I wouldn’t believe you if you said the same to me
And near death, last breath, and barely hanging on
Would you believe me if I said I didn’t need you?
Well… no one couldn’t say Jake didn’t keep Lao Shi active. He sighed again.
Why? Why did he always mess up? It seemed every time he tried to protect his grandson, tried to help him, he ended up just widening the gap between them.
Don’t be so scared to take a second for reflection
To take a leave of absence, see what you’re made of
So I’m selfish, and you’re sorry
When I’m gone you’ll be going nowhere fast
So who’s selfish, and who’s sorry?
Wasn’t it enough? Wasn’t it enough that he tried, he’d left his homeland? Wasn’t it enough that he’d faced the Dark Dragon? Or did the Good Lord just enjoy laughing at him Up There?
Whatever the reason, Lao Shi was run ragged. He was old, he was tired; crap, he wouldn’t be surprised if he just up and died one day. That was how tired he was.
But he couldn’t die, and he definitely couldn’t be tired.
After all… if something happened to him, who would take care of Jake?
Would you believe me if I said I didn’t need you,
‘Cause I wouldn’t believe you if you said the same to me
And near death, last breath, and barely hanging on
Would you believe me if I said I didn’t need you?
Stupid question, he knew. A very stupid question. Susan could take of Jake, Haley, his friends Trixie and Spud, heck, even Rose could take care of Jake if something happened to him.
He’d probably prefer Rose to me anyway…
Another sigh eased past the old man’s lips, shadowed by a weary smile.
“Sorry, young dragon,” he murmured. “But you’re stuck with me for awhile longer.”
Someone, somewhere said some things that may have sparked some sympathy
But don’t believe
Don’t believe a word you’ve heard about me
He really was tired, for some reason; giving in, Lao Shi rested his head on the countertop again. No one was there to see him, anyway. Even Fu Dog was out.
The shop was silent.
“You’ll learn, Jake.” His voice was soft. “You’ll learn…”
Don’t be so scared, it’s harder for me
Don’t be so scared
Don’t be so scared, it’s harder for me
Don’t be so scared, it’s harder for me
Don’t be so scared, it’s harder for me
Don’t be so scared
Where had this exhaustion come from? Lao Shi frowned a little but didn’t stir, just closed his eyes.
Jake really wasn’t a bad kid, he mused. He meant well; he really did. His heart just got in the way sometimes.
Lao Shi honestly believed sometimes that Jake’s heart was two sizes to big, but that was a good thing.
The bigger the heart, the fiercer the protector.
Would you believe me if I said I didn’t need you,
‘Cause I wouldn’t believe you if you said the same to me
And near death, last breath, and barely hanging on
Would you believe me if I said I didn’t need you?
Because that was Jake. Lao Shi smiled tiredly.
Jake had a big heart—big enough, even, to sometimes overlook the danger and darkness of others. This goodness in him was also the thing that could possibly lead to his downfall.
Lao Shi knew this. And that was why… he couldn’t…
Someone, somewhere said some things that may have sparked some sympathy
But don’t believe
Don’t believe a word you’ve heard
He couldn’t…
Too late.
“Forgive me, young dragon.” His voice shook.
No one knew when it ended; no one was there to know. Silence still ruled in the small electronics shop.
But this… was true silence.
Would you believe me if I said I didn’t need you?
‘Cause I wouldn’t believe you
Wouldn’t believe you now
Would you believe me if I said I didn’t need you?
‘Cause I wouldn’t believe you
Wouldn’t believe you now
The End
I have no clue what inspired me to write this, so please don't ask.
