The first part of my ADJL trilogy. I've already posted this on FF.net a long time ago, just felt like posting it here. Posting here might give me a reason to update too.
One Step Closer
Chapter 1
“Why did she have to leave?” Jake thought sitting on the rooftop of Canal Street Electronics. It had been 6 months since the Grand Equinox Hunt and Rose was still gone. Ever since the hunt all Jake could think about was Rose, no matter what he was doing she always entered his mind. Slowly he got up, changed into his dragon form and lifting his mighty wings, shot up into the air.
Soaring above the city, he tried to clear his mind but it was useless. As he passed by the Empire State Building the gargoyles waved at him, he absent mindedly waved back, still thinking about her. After a few more minutes he decided to head home.
When he returned home it was still afternoon, but he felt strangely tired. He went to his room and fell into a troubled sleep. A few hours later he awoke to the sound of the doorbell. He managed to get up and stagger down the stairs to the door.
“Must be Trixie or Spud” Jake thought groggily as he opened the door. Instead he found Rose.
Holy short chapter Batman! This is my first fanfic and it’s a bit hard to start but I promise it will start to move along smoothly soon.

One Step Closer
Chapter 2
“Rose!” Jake gasped stepping away from the door. “Oh Jake I’m so sorry” she cried wrapping her arms around his neck. “I was always told that dragons were the enemy and that they had no feelings and cared for no one” Rose sobbed burying her head in his shoulder, “Please forgive me, Jake, I love you” she said looking up into his face with tear streaked eyes. “Rose, Rose, calm down, it’s okay, here sit down” he whispered leading her over to the couch. They sat down and she rested her head on his shoulder. “My uncle was furious with me, he made me stay home and kept going to these secret meetings” she said “Then, one day he told me he would give me one last chance to fulfill my destiny, or he would kill me.” “That night I broke out, you were the only person I could go to” she said softly, a single tear rolling down her cheek. “Don’t worry Rose, you can stay here, I’ll protect you” Jake said putting his arm around her shoulder, “I love you Rose.” She turned towards him and he kissed her lightly, she returned the kiss pulling him closer. “Thank you so much” she whispered in his ear as she rested her head on his shoulder again.
Later on Jake’s mom returned home and he explained the whole situation to her. She said that Rose could stay, letting her sleep on the couch downstairs. Jake’s dad was away on business but Jake knew that when he returned he would have to tell is father everything, about being a dragon, about the Huntslcan, everything.
That night, Jake came downstairs and found Rose sitting on the couch. “Hey” he said “How are you doing.” “Okay, I guess” she replied “I’m still worried though, I’m afraid my uncle will find me.” “Don’t worry Rose, you’ll be safe here, goodnight” he said, kissing her softly. “Goodnight Jake, thank you” she said softly. Jake returned to his room and fell into a peaceful sleep, the first one in a long time.
The next morning, Jake woke up suddenly to the sound of the doorbell, again. “Who could it be now” he thought trudging down the stairs. This time, it was the Dragon Council. “We need to talk” said councilor Andam coldly.

Chapter 3 and 4 are up
One Step Closer
Chapter 3
“C-councilor Andam, w-what a pleasant surprise” Jake laughed nervously. “We don’t have time for games Jake” said councilor Chang sternly, “Where is she?” “Who?” asked Jake, knowing fully who they meant. “Jake, don’t lie” sighed Lao Shi, “Where is the Huntsgirl?” “She’s not the Huntsgirl, her name is Rose and she has given hunting up” growled Jake. “It doesn’t matter, if she used to be a hunter, then she is a murderer” barked Chang, pushing passed him. “Search the house!” ordered Chang, “She’s here somewhere.” Jake tried to move to stop her but was held back by his grandfather. “Stay here Jake, let them look.” Lao Shi told him. After what seemed like a lifetime, the councilors assembled back at the front door. “Apparently she isn’t here” said Chang angrily, “But we’ll be back again, you can’t hide her forever boy.” She said looking at Jake, her eyes blazing. And with that, the Dragon Council left. Jake quickly closed the door and ran into the living room. “Rose!” he shouted “Rose where are you?” He darted upstairs to find her climbing in from his bedroom window. “Rose, where, how, what did you do?” he asked, sighing relief. “I went out the back door and climbed up to your window” she explained, “I waited there until the council had left.” “Oh Rose! I was afraid I lost you” he said, wrapping his arms around her. “Jake! How could you let a hunter into this house” shouted Lao Shi ascending the stairs. “Do you know how much trouble you could get into doing this?” he said furiously, “The council considers it to be a crime just to be in the Huntsclan.” “I won’t let them hurt her, it’s not fair” Jake growled. “Fine Jake” Lao Shi sighed, “But you’ll get no sympathy from me when they catch her. With that, he left quickly, grumbling to himself. “What will they do if they find me?” Rose asked. “I’m not sure, but I think you should stay in my room tonight” he said worriedly, “I don’t think we’ll be so lucky if the council returns.”
That night Rose lay on Jake’s bed while Jake sat against the wall by the door. “Jake are you sure about this?” Rose asked, “I don’t think you need to guard the door.” “Rose, I’m afraid of what they might do to you if you’re caught” he replied sadly, “So I’m not taking any chances, goodnight Rose, I love you.” “I love you to Jake, goodnight” she said sleepily. He sat there, waiting until she was asleep, then, finally falling asleep himself, still troubled over what to do.
The next morning he woke up and found Rose still sound asleep. He quietly left the room and padded downstairs. As he sat there staring into space when he heard something behind him. He turned to see the Dragon Council standing by the door, one of them was bringing Rose down the stairs. “By order of the World Dragon Council, you, Rose, are to be tried for crimes against the magical world” Chang read off from a scroll, “If found guilty you will be executed.” Dun, dun, duuuuuuun. Just as a note, Chang is on the Dragon Council for this series and not in jail because it hasn’t been found out yet that she’s a traitor.
One Step Closer
Chapter 4
Jake walked down the corridor, his footfalls rebounding off the cavernous walls. He was in the Hall of the Dragon Council on Draco Isle, where Rose’s trial was to take place. He turned and walked down a short flight of stairs to a guarded door. “I’m here to see Rose” Jake said to the guard. The guard opened the door and stood aside. Jake walked into a long, dark room; cells ran down each side of the passageway. He walked over to one of the cells; sitting on a cot inside was his love, Rose. “Jake” she said, looking up at him, her eyes were red from crying; “Jake I’m so sorry I got you into this.” “It’s not your fault Rose, I shouldn’t have been so careless, I let them get you” Jake said, walking over to the bars. Rose stood up and walked over to Jake, she took hold of his hands, pulling him closer to her. He leaned in and they kissed between the old iron bars, he wished they could’ve been closer but these walls, these godd*mn walls kept them separated. “Rose I’ll fight for you, I’ll do everything I can to get you out of this” he said. “Thank you Jake, but I don’t think they’re going to let me go” she said sadly, “They wanted me to die right from the start.” “Rose, please don’t say that” Jake said, tears welling in his eyes, “We’ll make it out of this somehow.” “I love you Jake, I always have and always will” Rose said, a tear ran down her cheek. “I love you Rose” Jake said, his voice trembling. “Alright, it’s time to go” the guard said. The guard escorted Jake to the door. Just before he left, Jake turned around to look and the girl he loved so much, but was forbidden to see. Rose stood at the door to her cell, looking at Jake longingly. Jake walked out the door and ascended the stairs back into the main corridor. The trial would start in one hour. “I’ll defend you Rose” he whispered to himself, “Whatever it takes I’ll fight for you.”
Jake walked into the large, bustling hall, the benches on either side of him filled with dragons as well as other magical creatures. At the front of the hall sat the Dragon Council. Jake took a seat beside his grandfather near the front of the hall. Everyone became silent as Rose was brought in by two guards. She was brought in front of the council and her handcuffs were removed. “Rose” Councilor Chang beckoned, “You are accused of crimes against the magical community. If you are found innocent, you will be released with the knowledge that you will never speak of this incident ever again.” “However if you are found guilty” she continued, “You will be executed, is that clear?” “Yes” Rose replied quietly. “Now, how do you plead?” Chang asked, she was clearly on edge, ready to snap if provoked. “I plead innocent” Rose answered. A ripple of murmurs ran across the room. “Very well” Chang responded, picking up a scroll. “You are accused of the following crimes” Chang read, “Theft of leprechaun gold, theft of one griffin egg, the attempted murder of one dragon the kidnapping of three councilors as well as the murders of ten magical creatures.” “But I never killed any magical creatures” Rose said, taken aback, “I never killed any of them.” “We’ll see about that” Chang said coldly, “What of the other crimes?” “I was forced to by my uncle” Rose said, “I was always told that magical beings were evil things that should be killed, now that I know that’s not true I wish I was never part of the Huntsclan.” “Sucking up to this council will not help you” Chang responded, “It also proves you are guilty.” Rose’s head hung in shame, a tear dropped to the floor where she stood. “The council and I have all the information we need” said Chang, “We will convene and return with a verdict shortly.” The Dragon Council left the hall and Rose was escorted out by guards; many dragons got up and started talking in small groups. “It’s not fair” Jake grumbled, “They’re making some of that up.” “Jake, there is nothing you can do, the Dragon Council’s verdict is final, and there are no changes” Lao Shi said calmly, “We will know their decision shortly.”
After a few minutes the Dragon Council returned and Rose was brought back in. “We have reached our verdict” Chang said, “We unanimously find Rose guilty of all charges. You are hereby sentenced to death.” “NO!” Jake yelled, “It’s not fair, you made up those murders, you liars!” “Jake! Control yourself!” Lao Shi whispered angrily. “None of that was made up Mr. Long; you should count yourself lucky that we didn’t charge you for keeping a Huntsclan member in your home” Chang replied calmly, she turned to Rose once again, “You will be executed tomorrow morning at eleven o’clock.” “Councilors please reconsider” Jake pleaded, “She’s only thirteen, please let her go. Please just open your eyes and see her for what she truly is, a kind, loving person.” “We do not make any exceptions for hunters Mr. Long” Chang replied coolly, “Also, this council has agreed to grant you one last wish before you are killed; what will it be?” “Rose stepped forward and cleared her throat, “I wish to spend my last night with Jake, my boyfriend.” “Granted” Chang said, “But understand that the house will be watched, you will have no chance to escape.” “I understand councilor” Rose replied. “Then this court is adjourned” Chang said.
That night Jake and Rose sat beside each other on Jake’s bed, this would be their last night together. “I’m sorry Rose, I failed you” Jake said. “Jake, it’s not your fault, it’s nobody’s” Rose replied. She leaned over and kissed Jake on the cheek. “You tried your best” she said, her worries seemed to have disappeared. They turned to each other and in an instant they were kissing, arms wrapped around each other. They lay back on the bed; making up for all those times their first kiss was interrupted. They lay there, making out for more than an hour before falling asleep, still in each others arms.
Later that night Jake awoke with a start. He thought he heard something pounding around nearby. He dismissed the thought and tried to go to sleep again. Suddenly the door to his room burst open, ninja clad hunters rushed in. Before he could do anything, Jake was thrown against the wall. The hunters grabbed Rose and gagged her. As they ran out of the room Jake got up and raced after them. As he ran out the door someone swung a Huntstaff at him, knocking him back. He managed to pick himself and once again, continued after them, he couldn’t let them take Rose. “ROSE! NO!” he cried, rushing out the door. “COME BACK HERE YOU BASTARDS!” he yelled as he raced down the street. Suddenly, there was a flash of green light and the hunters and Rose disappeared. “NO!” Jake cried, “BRING HER BACK YOU COWARDS!” He dropped to his knees and started to cry, they couldn’t take her from him like this. He was furious; he started to pound the cement with his fists until they bled. His love was gone…again.
THE END
Well, this is the end of my first story, sorry it’s so short. The next story, entitled Fallen Leaves, will be out soon. The other two stories in this trilogy will be longer, I promise. Republic of Vancouver Island
